Orana Catholic Primary School
Term 2 Week 9
Excellence
Our community values an attitude of enthusiastically applying energy and effort to become better learners. Excellence is evident when:
• we do our best to develop our talents and share them with others
• we have high expectations of what we can achieve
• we take risks and experiment with the way we learn
• we work hard to do our best work
• we celebrate our achievements
A Prayer for Persistence
Dear Parents and Carers,
Be persistent. We hear this word a lot. That word – Persistence. To continue in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. To endure over a prolonged period. Steadiness.
I love that word. It comes up so often in Scripture. Everything I’ve ever done that has been worthwhile in life, all that is good – has taken persistence. Whether it be dealing with a day of difficult decisions, my career, parenting, marriage and of course education – it all takes persistence.
Built into the meaning of that word is to re-group, because sometimes you just need to re-group, hit the rest button and try again. Every day. Many moments within the day. That’s part of being persistent at anything.
Persistence is like waves lapping against a shore. Some have more force than others. Sometimes their energy is weak, while at other times the energy of the waves can change the shoreline. Sometimes they re-group and build up energy and swell to the shore with greater power. The waves are persistent, no matter what.
But the point is, waves don’t stop. We need to be persistent in our lives, just like the waves. As a child grows, and experiences successes and failures, we as adults need to use these moments to teach children how persistence helps us to tackle life's challenges, head on.
The Academic Reports and Individual Education Plan Reports will be released via SEQTA Engage, next Wednesday. This is a perfect time to sit down with your child and have a conversation about persistence: in what areas do I need to keep trying?
My parents always said to me when I was growing up, 'I don't care about the grades; I care about the effort and the comments.' I wonder how many of you also had parents who believed this and said this to you, as children? They were modelling persistence. Let us teach our children that PERSISTENCE IS OUR 'A' FOR KIDS.
Have a lovely week.

Grandparents' Morning - Thank you!
How joyful was the opportunity for our grandparents to share some time with our students? A huge thank you is extended to everyone who assisted in this event, which was, in essence, time to create wonderful memories as family members.
Faith in Action
Social Justice Team News
Many people in the Ukraine have been affected by war. The Orana Social Justice Team would like to assist Caritas Australia who are collecting and sending blankets to people in the Ukraine. If you have any spare blankets at home that are clean and in good condition, we would like you to drop them off at the Year 4W class by the end of this term. We will then pass them on to Caritas Australia. This is putting our school value of Generosity and our school motto of To Give is to Receive into practice. We can work together to help others in need. Please put a special effort into doing this. Thank you.
LifeLink Day
On Friday July 1st, which is the last day of term, Orana will be holding a pyjama day. On this day, students are asked to come to school wearing their pyjamas and suitable enclosed footwear. A group of Year Five students have organised this activity to raise money for LifeLink. Students are asked to contribute a gold coin donation to this worthy cause. LifeLink Day provides a wonderful opportunity for students attending Catholic schools within the Archdiocese of Perth to join together to show their support for the many service agencies run by the Catholic Church. These agencies help the homeless, people who are disadvantaged and those in need. Last week our Year Six students participated in the official online launch of LifeLink 2022. Thank you for supporting us.
First Communion
Congratulations to our students from Orana, and the children from the Sts John and Paul Parish who received their First Holy Communion last weekend. It was a very special time for the children, their families, friends and parishioners. The Communicants are to be commended on the reverence and prayerfulness they displayed at both Masses. Thank you to everyone who supported them on their journey, and to those who contributed to make the celebrations so special, including Fr Thai, Fr CJ, the acolytes, musicians, altar servers and catechists.
This weekend, the Communicants are invited to attend either Saturday night Mass (5.30pm) or the Sunday 10.30am Mass to receive their certificates and celebrate together with a cake at the conclusion of Mass. They may wear their First Communion outfits to these Masses.

Bully Zero
UNDERSTANDING BULLYING
Next Wednesday, 29th June, students in Year One to Six will attend an incursion in the hall that helps them to understand bullying.
Young people are provided with evidence-based information on bullying, the different types of bullying and its impact on young people. Participants are also taught a variety of strategies to help them assess and respond to bullying situations, whilst also identifying and understanding the role of bystanders.
IT TAKES A VILLAGE
On Tuesday, 26th July 6-7.30pm, parents are invited to attend the following workshop.
The session is aimed at Teachers and Parents and recognises the importance of the whole school community coming together to help recognise and prevent all types of bullying. The session provides understanding of bullying behaviours, how to recognise it and how to prevent it and manage it.
COVID-19 Update
WA Health provides information directly to the Covid-19 positive person / caregiver following their registration of a Covid-19 positive test result with WA Health via this Link.
Parents and carers are encouraged to continue their reporting of close contact or Covid-19 positive status to schools through the Covid-19 self-reporting portal via this link. The CEWA COVID-19 Self-Reporting Portal has been updated to align with the current WA Health’s Health Test, Trace, Isolate, Quarantine (TTIQ) Directions. Please do not underestimate the importance of informing the school of a positive Covid-19 case / Close Contact status. Your actions will ensure the risk to others is minimised and that we do our very best to limit the spread of the virus across our community. While RATs can be a convenient and efficient method of testing, a PCR test continues to be the preferred method of COVID-19 detection, due to its clinical accuracy. Where a person is symptomatic of COVID-19, they should be encouraged to undertake a PCR test and isolate, even if a preliminary RAT has returned a negative result.
Health and hygiene promotion and enhanced cleaning regimes remain in place. For now, some risk minimisation strategies remain in place which are over and above the government measures for the safety of our community. Further information on school operating guidelines for the new baseline settings is available on the school website.
Week 9 (20th June to 24th June)
There were 6 cases reported to the school this week. Please carefully monitor for symptoms and get tested if symptoms develop. Please keep your children at home if they are unwell.
As stated in the correspondence sent via SEQTA on Thursday, 23rd June, people are not required to be vaccinated to work/volunteer/visit on school grounds from 10th June.

Positive Behaviours and Student Support Guidelines - Part 6
In the Orana Catholic Primary School Positive Behaviours and Student Support Guidelines, when it is time to process what we may have done wrong, we complete a 'time to think' sheet (see below). This is a valuable method in allowing time for children to explore how their actions have affected others and themselves and to find ways to restore these relationships. On many occasions, this time is shared with an adult so that it is processed properly.

SOCIAL WORKER NEWS
Communicating Emotional Dysregulation
The human brain is truly amazing. It is the control centre which helps us stay alive, physically and emotionally and enables us to make sense of, and respond to, the complex world around us. It developed from the bottom up, starting with the basic survival functions in the brainstem, through to the mammalian midbrain which is the centre of emotions and the top of our brain, the cortical brain which helps us make sense of it
