Library Media Center Newsletter
Where the learning never stops!
First marking period update
This newsletter will be sent home to parents once a marking period to keep everyone updated with all of the exciting activities taking place in the Library Media Center, some of which are listed above in the display case exhibit put together by our library clerk, Ms. O. It's been a busy start to the school year. Students have been checking out books at a record pace! The two most popular titles so far this year have been The Maze Runner (read the book -- then see the movie!) and Girl, Stolen. We're gearing up for the Battle of the Books, which officially kicks off in December with the annual after-school Readathon (pizza, prizes and extra credit!). This year's list has just been announced! Mr. Bilmes has also done a lot of teaching this fall, including lessons on 9/11, Plagiarism, Grade 8 immigration debates and Visual Literacy, which had students closely examining two famous paintings of George Washington. Literacy students had fun speed-dating books earlier this year, too. A lot of them found a match! You can also keep up with events in the LMC by following the LMC Twitter feed (@SMS_LMC), which has over 100 followers!
The "Old Perfessor"
Casey Stengel, the Hall of Fame manager of the Yankees and then the Mets, whose nickname was "The Old Perfessor," is the newest addition to the LMC staff. Casey once said, "Now there's three things you can do in a baseball game: You can win or you can lose or it can rain."
Creating global connections
8 Red students are excited about the Global Studies Global Students project they are working on with students from Canada and Spain. This is a link to a map of participating schools. They are making presentations on the 5 Most Pressing Problems facing the world.
PTO Book Fair a big hit
The PTO Book Fair was a big hit with students and parents on Curriculum Night, as hundreds of people stopped by to browse and enjoy the refreshments and check out the books on sale. Thank you to the PTO for running it for 3 days that week.
Making eBooks easy!
It's easier than ever to download eBooks
We have over 100 eBooks on our Follett Shelf. Grade 7 students have been getting instruction on how to download and synch the two free apps -- Destiny Quest and Follett Enlight K-12 Reader -- they need to self checkout eBooks and to download them onto their devices so they can even read them offline. Instructions on how to do so are also on the LMC website.
