SST ranked #1 High School in Oregon by U.S. News & World Report
Gold medals are awarded to the top 500 schools based on highest college readiness.
To produce the 2017 Best High Schools rankings, U.S. News & World Report teamed with North Carolina-based RTI International, a global nonprofit social science research firm. RTI implemented the U.S. News comprehensive rankings methodology, which is based on these key principles: that a great high school must serve all of its students well, not just those who are college bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show it is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.
U.S. News & World Report analyzed federal and state government and private data for more than 20,487 public high schools across the country, and ranked more than 6,000 schools – only those that the data indicated were exemplary.
Oregon high school students are required to earn at least 24 credits to graduate. Many Beaverton students earn more credits. Students also must demonstrate mastery of essential skills, such as writing clearly and accurately, according to the Oregon Department of Education.
Fir Grove Science Expo was a hit!
Fir Grove students led stations in coding, Lego Robotics, and Ozobots. The biggest draw were the robots and hover chair. It was a great way to apply learning in the community and included the whole family from toddlers to adults.
ACMA's Julane Stites recognized by Oregon Symphony
The Schnitzer Wonder Award was created in 2015 by Jordan Schnitzer to honor his parents, Harold and Arlene Schnitzer, and their commitment to philanthropy, fairness, opportunity, education, and creativity as the heart of a strong and vibrant community. The award honors an individual or organization that directly works to build community through the next generation of artists and/or student musicians.
This award comes with a $10,000 monetary prize, intended to help further the honoree’s work. Ms. Stites is the third recipient of this award. Dance West, under the direction of Ms. Stites, has been privileged to perform regularly with the Oregon Symphony for more than 16 years.
Congratulations, Julane!
Pete Lukich awarded Jim Rotromel Lifetime Service Award
Pete Lukich, Athletic Director at Sunset High School, has been awarded the Jim Rotramel Lifetime Service Award by the Oregon Athletic Directors Association (OADA).
This award is given to an Athletic Director who exemplifies the profession with a life long commitment to serving today’s youth.
“Quite frankly, Pete Lukich is the greatest Athletic Director a school could ever hope to have. Student focused to the core, Pete is leading a movement toward athletic programs that are purpose driven and focused on developing character in all young women and men. He represents the very best of Sunset and the district as a whole,” says John Huelskamp, Principal at Sunset High School.
Planting Peace Poles at Elmonica ES
On Friday, April 21, parent volunteers and fourth and fifth-grade students planted six Peace Poles around the Elmonica Elementary School campus.
A Peace Pole is a handcrafted monument that displays the message May Peace Prevail on Earth on each of its four sides in the 24 languages spoken at Elmonica. There are tens of thousands of Peace Poles in 180 countries all over the world dedicated as monuments to peace.
Elmonica’s PTO President, Mark Hutchison, a member of the Downtown Portland Rotary Club who sponsored the Peace Poles, coordinated the planting and worked with students to write messages to the people of 30 years from now that will be stored inside the poles as a time capsule.

Eight BSD seniors named 2017 National Merit Scholarship Winners
Kaitlyn Stoehr, Southridge High School
Markab Han, Sunset High School
Bryan Lee, Westview High School
Mara Pearson, Sunset High School
Anshuman Radhakrishnan, Westview High School
Priyansh Sharma, Westview High School
Rohan Varma, Sunset High School
Lucia Zheng, International School of Beaverton (ISB)
National Merit $2500 Scholarship winners are the finalists in each state judged to have
the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. The number of winners named in each state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the nation’s graduating high school seniors.
These Scholars were selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high
school counselors, who appraised a substantial amount of information submitted by both the finalists and their high schools: the academic record, including difficulty level of subjects studied and grades earned; scores from two standardized tests; contributions and leadership in school and community activities; an essay written by the finalist; and a recommendation written by a high school official.
Congratulations Kaitlyn, Markab, Bryan, Mara, Anshuman, Priyansh, Rohan and Lucia, and good luck in all of your future endeavors!
BSD students named Corporate-Sponsored National Merit Scholars
Jennie Yan-Ren Wang at Westview High School was awarded the National Merit Brocade Scholarship. Brocade Communications Systems, Inc. sponsors this scholarship as part of its philanthropic support of higher education.
Joshua R. Howell at Sunset High School was awarded the National Merit Liberty Mutual Scholarship. Founded in 1912 in Massachusetts to coincide with the enactment of the workers’ compensation law, Liberty Mutual is now the largest underwriter of that type of insurance in addition to insuring all other forms of coverage, including life insurance, international insurance, and financial services.
Scholars were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for Finalists who are children of their employees, who are residents of communities the company serves, or who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage. More than 1,000 distinguished high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations.
Most of these awards are renewable for up to four years of college undergraduate study and provide annual stipends that range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Some provide a single payment between $2,500 and $5,000. Recipients can use their awards at any regionally accredited U.S. college or university of their choice.
Congratulations Jennie & Joshua!

Beate Pryor won $500 during STEM Week Oregon
May 1-7, 2017 was STEM Week Oregon, a state-wide movement to raise awareness, celebrate and engage in activities involving science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
During STEM Week, Beate worked in classrooms focusing on the engineering and design process. K-2 students looked at force and motion and created straw rockets. They had to figure out ways to make the rocket go further. In grades 3-5, students looked at force and motion by making roller coasters. They were given constraints and a challenge to build a four tower structure that would carry a marble from the top to the bottom.
Congratulations, Beate!
