Mrs. Greene's 3rd Grade
October 19, 2018
A Successful Week!
This week FLEW by... It always does when you are as busy as we are!
It sure was good to be back and seeing my little kiddos! I always look forward to seeing them after the weekend and, especially, after a long break.
Thank you, Mrs. Barnes, for the books you donated to our classroom. We have already put them to GREAT use! If anyone has books at home that your children have read and you are looking for a new home for them, we will take them!
The Scholastic Book order should arrive early next week. I have had several, anxious students ask me about this!
Data Binders were brought home from school today. Be sure to read your child's Personal Narrative. He/she worked very hard on their story. If you can find a strength and a suggested improvement to share with your child, it would be very helpful to reinforce what I am teaching in the classroom.
During a reading lesson this week, each child took a personal reading "GRIT" test. It is a measure of a student's reading grit (stamina, perseverance, engagement, etc...) Be sure to ask your child about his/her score. It is my goal to make each child LOVE to read by the end of 3rd Grade. I am constantly introducing new books and authors to the students. I am seeing the fruits of my labor in some of my students, but there are a few who are still hesitant about reading. Chances are if you describe your child as a hesitant reader, I've already identified him/her in the same way and am working on it! It's still early in the year...
That's it for now!

"Mrs, Greene, could I please make a new goal for myself today?"

Community Circle
A few highlights from our morning Community Circle time:
- Did you hear that we have a CLASS SONG? The name of the song is - I Can't Smile Without You by Barry Manilow. We love listening to and singing along with the song!
- We learned about giving and receiving a compliment. What do you do when you receive a compliment? There are different ways to respond.
- Goal Setting: Creating a daily/weekly goal is what successful people do. Check out the pictures below of a few of the goals that were set this week.

Around Room 9...
Here is What is Planned for our Short Week Next Week: October 8-10
Reading:
- Vocabulary: What do I do when I come across a word I don't know?
- Figurative Language
- Author's Purpose
Writing: Nonfiction: Information Writing
- We will begin working on an information writing piece next week. The students will spend time learning how to write an expository text. There will be a slight research component to this unit, but the focus is the process of writing this complicated genre.
Social Studies: Unit 8 - Economy
- Students are working on a group project. They started a business, complete with expenses and a budget.
Math: Unit 2 - Math Tools, Time, and Multiplication
- The Unit 2 Test will be given next Thursday and Friday. Look for a Study Guide to come home next Wednesday, October 24!
Please encourage your child to practice his/her multiplication facts! Spending 5-10 minutes each night makes a huge difference in the rate at which students progress with higher-level math concepts. Some students are ready for more challenging concepts, but basic multiplication facts are holding them back.
