Landmark Supreme Court Cases
This seminar will focus on Supreme Court cases that center on the Constitution and Federalism, the Constitution and the Commerce Clause, and cases that have shaped Civil Rights.
This would be a great session to attend for those of you teaching Civics/Economics. Substitutes are not paid for by the district.

Fluent vs. Nonfluent Readers
To better understand what reading is like for a nonfluent reader take a look at this chart. It compares what fluent readers do to what nonfluent readers and provides ideas to help your nonfluent readers.
World History
We are at the tail end of World War II and will be ready to jump into the early Cold War at the end of the week. Keep in mind the focus of the last part of this unit is on the shift of economic and political power structures throughout the world. This graphic organizer may be helpful when having students examine this.
Civics and Economics
Remember to use current event articles to help build literacy and bring relevance to the content. There are new articles every day that can be used with students to apply the information they are learning. Try looking at subjects they are interested in and find articles related to those subjects. Music, sports, and clothing are all high-interest topics for our students. Do a Google search for Football and supply and demand or economics and see if you can find an article that could be used to reinforce concepts being taught in class. You don't even need to use the entire article. Just use the portion that relates to what you are discussing. You can also use the Economics of Movies clips in Youtube.
American History 1
Looking ahead to Unit 6, Chapter 15 of the Documents and Debates Teaching American History book has some great primary sources that could be used to examine the debate over reasons for the war. And looking ahead, there is an entire collection of primary sources related to Reconstruction.
M/C Question Bank Update: Unfortunately the M/C questions for Units 5 and 6 will not be completed prior to Winter Break. There is hope that Unit 5 will be completed prior to the NC Finals and could be used for review. Both Units 5 and 6 will be ready by the time those units are taught in the Spring.
American History 2
We are just beginning Unit 7. This means we are looking at the 1960s and early 1970s. Teaching American History has an entire book dedicated to the Cold War which includes a ton of primary resources that fit into this unit. Additionally, the Documents and Debates book has a grouping of primary resources on the Civil Rights Act and the Equal Rights Amendment.
M/C Question Bank Update: The Unit 5 M/C questions are done and ready to be used. Unfortunately, the M/C questions for Units 6-8 will not be completed prior to Winter Break. They will be ready by the time those units are taught in the Spring.
Message from Melissa
Sorry I missed you last week. There just was not the time to get the newsletter done. C'est la vie.
Time is flying by as we move towards the winter break. Will we see snow before Christmas? It is possible. I know... just as long as it does not cause school to be canceled.
Stay well out there. There has been a lot of coughing and hacking going on.
Melissa
