Dear KAS Community,
Faculty Recruiting Update and a Request for Help! The leadership team was busy on Saturday November 13 meeting dozens of teaching candidates around the world at the Global Recruitment Collaborative’s Virtual Recruitment Fair. It was exciting to see how much interest there is from international school teachers to join the Dragons. Although we are casting our net globally, we are also aware that there are many good teachers locally, too. If you know of a great teacher who might like to join us at KAS, please ask them to view the updated vacancy list on our website and, if they see a suitable vacancy, to contact us at email@example.com. We are also always looking for qualified substitute teachers in case you know anyone who might be interested.

At our Open Board Meeting on Wednesday, we had 25+ parents in attendance on Zoom. We heard from KPMG, the external auditing firm, that the school is in good financial condition and that there are no issues of concern. The Leadership Team reported on the work that our teachers are doing with curriculum and for our IB programmes. Our Board also adopted two new statements that will be signed annually by all members of the Board of Directors: a confidentiality agreement and a statement regarding any potential conflicts of interest. There were other decisions made by the Board in their Closed Meeting, and we will report on those to the community in separate emails.

We are in regular touch with our liaisons at the Board of Education. We are compliant with the guidance that we receive from that official channel. I know that there is a lot of parent anxiety about the Winter Concert on December 10. Many parents want to attend in person. We want the same thing too, but we are also charged with compliance to the official BoE guidance we receive. The BoE’s restrictions change on a regular basis as more and more people are vaccinated and as conditions stabilize. We’ll continue to check in with the BoE and will inform parents quickly, if the current restrictions regarding parents on campus are relaxed by the BoE.

This is the season for thankfulness. Many cultures celebrate an autumn or harvest festival. The USA and Taiwan both have their traditions. This week will be the US Thanksgiving holiday, and we have much to be thankful for as KAS Dragons. We live in a green, safe city on ‘the beautiful isle.’ All our new teachers arrived as quickly as possible in the midst of a global pandemic. Our community has been almost untouched by the rolling lockdowns and hybrid or online learning that kept more than 1.3 billion children out of school for months and months. We have plentiful food at our tables, and beautiful spaces to learn in. Our teachers have jumped into curriculum and planning work this semester, while still showing the care and attention that our students need every day.

There is still much to be done in the coming weeks and months of the school year. This week, let’s all pause, reflect on the past four months, and say thanks for everything that’s been accomplished at KAS in the first semester. Parents, please take time to say thank you to a few teachers or other staff members—even a heartfelt THANK YOU on Line or email is valued and treasured! The science of wellbeing is clear: share your appreciation and gratitude to others, and you’ll feel better yourself.

There are many items on my ‘gratitude list’ this year. I am thankful for the warm welcome that so many teachers, staff, Board members and parents have given to Laura and I. I’m thankful for the respect and trust that’s been extended to me in my role here. I’m grateful for the strong foundations we have at KAS, such as passionate teachers, beautiful facilities, and exemplary programs for students. I’m even thankful for the work ahead, to develop a stronger vision together for excellence in learning, to improve our facilities and programs, and to ensure that all our students grow BIG in their time at Kaohsiung American School.

Dear 10th Grade Parents,
Before we leave for the winter holidays the current G10 students will learn about the IB Diploma Programme in order to determine if it is a good fit for them in G11 and G12. Parent support is a crucial component of our student’s success in the DP. I HIGHLY encourage all G10 parents to join me for a virtual information session about the IB DP on December 9th at 2:00 PM (the link for the meeting will be shared at a later date). I am happy to meet with you individually so that you have the opportunity to ask questions and learn more if the DP is the best choice for your child. Wondering what to do in the city during the Thanksgiving Holiday? Enjoy an exciting concert at Kaohsiung Weiwuying Concert Hall! Special Thanks to one of our parents, who has set up discount tickets for the KAS community. The violinist Hu Nai-Yuan, the 1st Prize Winner in the Queen Elizabeth Music Competition, plays “The Four Seasons” with the Counterpoint Ensemble at 1500 on Saturday, November 27. Our G9 student, Sigrid Liu, the 5th Steinway Youth Piano Competition finalist, is honored to host a Piano Recital on December 9 at 19:30 in National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts (Weiwuying) Recital Hall. 我們九年級學生 Sigrid Liu，第五屆史坦威國際青少年鋼琴大賽決賽入圍者，將於2021年12月9日晚間7點30分在衛武營國家藝術文化中心表演廳舉辦個人鋼琴獨奏會，Sigrid將演奏多首不同時期的鋼琴作品，展現不同的演奏技巧與風格。
Elementary parents, there are two Winter Holiday Camps for students in grades 1–4 during the winter break. Invention & Design, Coding and Robotics are the themes for our Skyrock Winter Camp. Students will be on the KAS campus in two small groups for grades 1–2 and grades 3–4. Campers can choose to participate in one, two or three weeks of the camp—each week will feature different projects and materials. There are still spaces remaining in a few of their sections. Skyrock will be on campus to meet parents who are interested at 2:30 PM on Wednesday, November 24. Please sign up HERE to meet them before the holiday begins.

Summershine Camps is also offering two Winter Holiday Camp opportunities for young KAS Dragons. Their first camp is an adventure-style camping experience in Kenting with two nights of camping included. Their second offering is a 4-day activity-filled day camp at the Museum of Fine Arts Park, with a day trip to the countryside included.

Child Protection/Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Staff Committee:
Last year KAS staff formed a Child Protection committee to develop policies and practices to ensure that KAS follows local and international laws pertaining to child abuse reporting and safeguarding in schools. The committee expanded to address issues around Diversity, Inclusion, Equity, and Justice, as we hope to better understand how KAS students experience the school based on their multiple layers of identity that include race, culture, language, gender, orientation and other factors. Our goal is to create a school environment that is free from bias, hate, and oppression, where all students feel supported. The committee meets bi-weekly to create action plans to ensure students’ emotional and physical safety. We hope to find opportunities to include parents in these discussions in the near future.

Student Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice Club:
Standing at the perspective of a student, where although we took up the majority of the school population, our voices aren’t always heard. Topics that DEIJ covers tend to be somewhat sensitive, involving their identity, it can be somewhat hard for students to express their opinion regarding their safety. The purpose of DEIJ is to help students to feel safe to express their opinion, and to develop practices for the entire school to have understanding on topics surrounding DEIJ. We hope that school staff and parents can join our discussion and potential discussion on school policy and the changes we can bring to this community.

Our approach to learning is to prepare students for a healthy and happy life. At KAS, we support the whole child approach to learning. This approach helps students to prepare for challenges and to have opportunities to grow from mistakes. Children build resilience by expressing, identifying and managing emotions. We address students' needs through a team approach that works with teachers, students, and families. We encourage parents to reach out to their child’s teachers and counselor so that we can create a plan to best support your child’s personal needs. We know that parents are an essential part of students' success.
Additionally, the whole child approach focuses on a healthy lifestyle and this includes exercise, nutrition and sleep.
Please help your child to get at least eight hours of sleep each night.
Since our secondary students use computers at school it is important to have students unplug from all electronic devices to ensure adequate rest.
If your child is concerned about homework please feel free to discuss this with your child’s teacher and/or counselor. Homework is never an excuse to compromise health.
We are here to support you in helping your child to be healthy.
A nurturing environment reminds children that they are appreciated and loved. We encourage you to find ways to celebrate your child’s accomplishments (the small successes are just as important as the big ones). By asking your child what makes you feel proud or tell me about your efforts, you will support a growth mindset and healthy self-esteem. While we understand that it’s important to be modest and humble, it is paramount you recognize your child’s effort. At KAS we work hard to encourage through positive recognition and praise.

For those of you who don’t know me yet, my name is Tina Wu and I was a class of 2014 KAS graduate. In the past two years, I was able to meet (in some cases, meet again!) the amazing next generation of Dragons. These current students help keep me passionate about all things KAS, 7 years after graduating.
I am passionate about coordinating our internship program, the Future Leaders Program, and the Service Learning program, which mainly includes working with teachers in MYP Service As Action and solidifying our service learning vision and policies. I’m excited to be a part of the KAS community in this capacity and look forward to continuing to support current students!

Today, I will share our exciting budding partnership with Volunteering Taiwan (V Taiwan). Shoutout to our amazing PTA members for connecting us with this great organization! In the next few newsletters, I will introduce more about progress with MYP Service As Action (service connections and action from the curriculum), spotlight student clubs and initiatives, and discuss more of KAS’s service learning vision.

Service Trip to Meinong 美濃服務學習活動
On October 23, Saturday, eleven KAS 11th and 12th graders and I went on a service day trip to Meinong organized in partnership with V Taiwan and the Kaohsiung Youth Bureau. We not only learned about Meinong and Hakka culture but also worked in tandem with international volunteers aged 16~35 to transform a family house into a coworking space by painting walls and putting together furniture. Two of our passionate and artistic students, Amelie ‘22 and Elaina ‘22, even borrowed a peer’s iPad and discussed ideas with the project manager to sketch a design on the spot. Sean ‘23, who is from Meinong, was interviewed and quoted by several big news outlets.
10月23日，星期六：我帶著十一位高二及高三的學生到美濃一天。這次的美濃活動是與 V Taiwan 及青年局國際志工團一起舉辦的，所以當天，我們 KAS 的在校生不僅有機會認識美濃、客家文化，還與16~35歲的國際志工一起粉刷、組裝、上漆，將當地徐生明教練伙房修繕成共享空間。兩位對藝術有興趣及能力的學生，Amelie ‘22 和 Elaina ‘22，甚至當場拿出同學的 iPad、與負責人討論便畫出了草稿、在粉刷完時幫白白的牆添加美濃當地的特色及學生的創意。在那面牆被美化的同時，來自美濃的 Sean ‘23 在另一個角落克服緊張的心情接受各式電視、新聞台的採訪。
Volunteering +20 International Conference「臺灣志工+20」國際論壇
On Tuesday, I attended a virtual conference upon invitation by V Taiwan and learned about service learning and non-profit organizations in the context of Taiwan. It was a great learning experience for me, and I felt affirmed to hear that KAS is already on board with the general trend of academics, NGO CEOs, and other leaders of service in Taiwan. I look forward to more opportunities to develop my own skills to bring KAS students the most forward-looking perspectives and visions in our service learning initiatives.
這週二，我參加了 V Taiwan 主辦的「臺灣志工 +20」國際論壇，從中更認識臺灣志工團及服務學習的理念，瓶頸，及目標。這次的研習不僅是個很棒的學習經驗，也讓我更具體的了解到 KAS 服務學習的發展方向是符合在臺灣學術界，非營利組織，和其他方面的領導者共同擬定的目標及國際志工的趨勢。我很期待在未來的其他研習、論壇、及會議中更努力地加強自己對世界各地服務觀念及計畫的理解，加強自己的能力，將最先進的世界觀及理念帶入 KAS 服務學習計畫。
We’re on the National Education Radio! KAS x 國立教育廣播電臺
Last week, V Taiwan invited me and several students to appear on their monthly collaboration with National Education Radio’s show, “Tea Time時光”. KAS students Amelie ‘22, Hiram ‘22, and Janna ‘23 and I were on the air 4:05 - 5:00 PM on November 17, Wednesday, to discuss the service learning program at KAS, students’ own service initiatives, and the trip to Meinong. Winter Break Service Opportunities 寒假服務學習活動
We are organizing another service trip with V Taiwan over winter break. I will send an email to all high school students with detailed information and an interest form. I welcome students to email me with any questions or concerns! Please help me encourage students to communicate with me and other adults.

Should I Hire an Agent?
It’s not necessary for KAS students and families to hire an outside agent. Your tuition includes professional college counseling services for every student. Students are requested to tell us if they work with an agent so that we can collaborate effectively. Please note: we do not release official transcripts to students or agents -- all transcripts must be sent directly to the university. All student work and writing submitted for college applications must adhere to the KAS Academic Honesty Policy.

IB University Recognition Policies
Information on how the IB Diploma or IB Certificates can earn a student college or university credit can be found on the IBO website and their University Policy Index. The range of credits, scholarship and other benefits awarded to IB Diploma students is broad. In some cases, students can earn a full year worth of college credits if they have successfully completed the full IB Diploma, saving time and money.關於IB證書如何能折抵大學學分等的資訊，公布在IBO網站或 University Policy Index 找到。抵免學分或奬學金或其它好處的範圍很廣，在某些情況下，如果學生完成完整的 IB 文憑課程，他們或許可以獲得一整年的大學學分，節省許多時間和金錢。
