Cougar Weekly Update
May 10, 2019
Principal's Message
What a wonderful week we had celebrating our wonderful teachers! I am honored each and every day to work with such a wonderful group of professionals! I appreciate all that the PTO and all parents did to help create a wonderful week!
This week we also celebrated our wonderful nurses! We appreciate all they do each day!
Kindergarten registration is off to a great start. If you know of a child in Manassas Park who will be 5 before October 1, 2019 please encourage them to register their child for kindergarten. We plan and hire teachers based on the number of students enrolled so registering early helps us be accurate.
Happy Mother's Day to all of the Moms who support our students each day!
Have a great weekend!
Mrs. Gwynn

MATHATHON
We are very excited to offer your child the opportunity to participate in our annual St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital Math-A-Thon. The program is designed to not only strengthen basic math skills, but also provide your child with the opportunity to build character and self-esteem through helping others. Why do we support this program? Cancer kills more children than any other disease. St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is America’s leading childhood cancer research center. Its purpose is to provide both medical treatments for desperately ill children and research that will permanently wipe out these deadly diseases. St. Jude treats its patients at no cost to their families and will even help to provide transportation and lodging if necessary. The Cougar community has raised over $155,000 since 1990 for the children of St. Jude!
Packets will go home with students on Monday, May 13th. Please read the parent letter for more details. Then sign the parent permission slip and return it to school by Friday, May 17th. All donations should be sent to school by Friday, May 31st.
If you have any questions, feel free to email our St. Jude Math-A-Thon Coordinator Mrs. Malia Hayes at malia.hayes@mpark.net.

Crayola Colorcycling Program
In honor of Earth Day coming up, our school is teaming up with Crayola for their ColorCycling program to encourage reducing, reusing, and recycling to help keep our planet clean! We are asking them to collect old Crayola markers and bring them to school in order to send to Crayola to be recycled into new markers.
Cougar Elementary will be participating in Uncle Slam’s Reading Program this year.
First Base- Uncle Slam, the Potomac Nationals mascot will come to visit us on Friday, May 31st at dismissal to encourage all of our students to keep on reading.
Second Base- Bookmarks will be distributed for each student to have one. Students will read four books and write them down on the back of the bookmark with a teacher’s or parent’s signature on the bottom to confirm that the books have been read.
Third Base- Cougar’s designated “Reading Game Day” is Sunday June 9th at 1:00. Encourage your students to attend the game that day WITH THEIR BOOKMARK to exchange it for 2 free tickets! The theme of the game is “Caped Crusaders,” meaning the students can wear a Superhero cape if they would like to. Students will be invited on the field before the start of the game to participate in a parade around the field honoring their commitment to reading! (If students can’t make the June 9th game, they can attend any of the other three themed games.) See attached.
Home Plate-Have fun and enjoy the game!
