OMS Library Update
April 2019
8th Grade Story Telling
After a week with artist in residence, Donna Marie Todd, eight grade students in Mr. Feste's and Ms. Langlois' classes presented traditional Jack Tales. Ms. Todd brought in two professional storytellers to be judges for the eighth grade storytelling. The top three storytelling groups will perform at an event in Asheville: Group 1 (Hunter Owen-Inabinett, DJ Graves, Gita Carmona, Bettie Corbett, Junior Baron), Group 2 (Angela Mayes, Kellie Memory, Caiden Lyda, Houston Morrow,
Jacob King), Maddie Norton (performing solo).
CTE Spark Tank
Students in Ms. Venturella's eight grade CTE classes are participating in Spark Tank. Groups of students decided on a product to make and sell. United Way set up for ten local entrepreneurs to listen to student pitches. In true Shark Tank fashion the entrepreneurs chose groups to sponsor. Students will make their products and sell them at a later date.
6th Grade Snap Curcuits
Students in Mr. Noteboom's sixth grade science class explored electronics through stations with Snap Circuits and a computerized simulation. After completing their task at each station, they answered a question relating to their task in the "real world". They also identified the flow of energy and drew a schematic drawing of their finished electronic task.
6th Grade Figurative Language Stations
Students in Ms. Ayer's language arts classes came to the library to work collaboratively on figurative language stations. At each station, students examined a book or an article to decide on the figurative language represented.
Regions 7 & 8 Professional Development
In early April, we hosted professional development for librarians in regions 7 and 8. The professional development was led by Jenny Umbarger and sponsored by the North Carolina School Library Media Association.
Visiting Author Todd Gallicano
Todd Gallicano, visiting author from Charlotte, talked with 6th grade students about the Hero's Journey and his fantasy novels. Students had the opportunity to purchase an autographed copy of his books. Special thanks to Malaprops for sponsoring this author visit!
6th Grade History Fair
Sixth grade students have worked hard since January researching a historical figure and creating websites. We created QR codes for each website and arranged the QR codes in chronological order. On April 25 and 26, students and parents visited the library to view the History Fair projects.

Our library at Owen Middle School is frequently a busy place. Students come to the library before school to work on projects, use our Maker Space, play games, and hang out with friends. During the day, students come to library on passes to check out books and with classes for check out and for lessons. Three blocks each day, 8th grade students come to the library to take online classes for high school credit. Also, teachers are able to reserve the space for visitors and class activities. Finally, a volunteer uses library space twice a week to work with Mr. Munn's math students.
