Student Store Coming Soon (Tienda para estudiantes próximamente)
Kennedy Cougars, get ready for our new online student store and Cougar Cash. We have purchased an app called PBIS Rewards where teachers can award Cougar Cash for students displaying Kennedy core values, PAWS: Prepared, Attitude(Positive), Wise Choices, Safe. Very soon students will learn how to access their accounts to track their Cougar Cash, and once a month students will be able to purchase items from the students store that they can then come and pick up. The app also allows us to have raffles where students can purchase raffle tickets using their Cougar Cash.

In case for some reason you didn’t receive it, here is the special announcement that went out last week on Friday with the survey. Also below are the slides and video that went out prior to that to give you some more information about what returning to school would look like at Kennedy since it provides more challenges than all of the other schools in the Redwood City School District because of all of our specialized programs.

Dear Kennedy Families,
As promised, below is the survey from the district about returning to school. I want you to know that all of us really miss our students and want to be with them in-person, but staff have a lot of concerns about safety, less instructional minutes, completely changing students’ schedules, behavior, and more. Before you complete the survey, here are some things families have asked me to share:
Only 21 out of 42 teachers (50%) are willing to return in the hybrid model. This is based on a survey from the district. The other half are unwilling to return in-person. (Again, this is only teachers and does not even incorporate administrators, instructional aides, office staff, etc. who are unwilling to return in the hybrid model and would take leave). The number of teachers unwilling to return at this site doesn’t compare to any of the other sites. This is by far the highest in the district. Again, this reflects the factors I mentioned above, plus staff who are at high risk because of medical conditions.
Almost all teachers at Kennedy prefer to stay in the distance learning model. Many had to say yes because they can’t afford to take unpaid leave and do not have a medical condition that would grant them the ability to only teach online.
Middle school is not like elementary school. Teachers have credentials that only allow them to teach certain subjects. So for us, having more than a couple of teachers not return makes the hybrid option very challenging because for example, a Language Arts teacher cannot teach math. So to be clear, with this many staff unwilling to return, even if half of the families chose the hybrid option it doesn’t mean we can offer a hybrid model because we won’t have the staff needed to run a middle school schedule.
At the other schools, parents can call the office to find out which teachers are not returning. While you can do that, too, again, it doesn’t make a lot of sense because if for some reason we can even offer the hybrid model we have to reschedule the students completely anyway. If you want your student to remain with their teachers then select the full distance learning model.
You are welcome to call the school with questions or email administrators.
Here is the survey, which is due by Monday, November 2, at 5:00 pm:
Sincerely,
Sabrina Adler

Sinceramente,
Sabrina Adler

Ayrshire Portrait Performed By The Kennedy Advanced Band (Retrato de Ayrshire interpretado por The Kennedy Advanced Band)
The Advanced Band has just finished their first collaborative project:
Ayrshire Portrait - Arranged by Michael Story
Performed by Kennedy Middle School Advanced Band
October 2020
Here is a message from Mrs. Julia Federico-Youngs:
Thank you all for taking a listen to our first full band collaboration! We are so excited to be able to perform "together" as a group even though we are all learning virtually. As you listen to this piece, I'd like you to keep the following in mind. These students have NEVER rehearsed together, NEVER played music together, are NOT following a conductor, and learned and recorded their parts INDIVIDUALLY from their homes. I am so proud of all the hard work that they have done to accomplish this, and we are excited to bring you more music soon!

This Wednesday, November 4, 8th grade students are invited to eat lunch and socialize together via Zoom from 12:15-1:00 pm. I will be sending out a Zoom link to all 8th graders via email. As they arrive, students will tell me who they want to be in a breakout room with. In order for me to put them in a breakout room, students must briefly come on camera so that I can verify that it is actually them. If this works well, we will roll this out to the other grades.

We know that many 8th graders will need recommendations from teachers and administrators for private high schools. While these generally aren’t due until January, please give us as much time as possible to complete them.
End of First Trimester (Fin del primer trimestre)
There are two weeks left in the first trimester. Please make sure you are checking PowerSchool regularly and making sure that your student is attending classes and completing assignments. Although we won’t be able to have an Honor Roll Breakfast like we normally do, we will still recognize our students who achieve a 3.75 and higher, and hand out certificates, honor roll shirts, (and medals for Principal’s Honor Roll - a 4.0 and higher).
We are hoping that come June we will be able to do some special things to celebrate our graduating 8th graders. In order to participate in the ceremony and any other activities, students will need to have a cumulative 2.0 or higher and have attended classes regularly.
The USDA approved an extension to the free meal program through December 2020, which is great news. Here are some highlights.
Effective, 9/1/20, free meals are available to children 2-18 years old.
All families welcome, not restricted to RCSD, Connect, or KIPP students
No meal card is required
Students do not have to be present
Attached below are two fliers with all of the details about how and where you can get meals at RCSD locations. Starting on September 14, there are some new changes. Mondays families can pick up meals for students for Monday through Wednesday, and on Thursdays families can pick up meals for the rest of the week. Again, please read the fliers for more details. We know there are circumstances in which families cannot attend the designated pick up times, but we don’t want any student to go hungry and not have food because of this. Please call 650-423-2279 to request more information about meal delivery.

Shadowing at Sequoia HS in Fall 2020 (Visitar Sequoia HS en otoño de 2020)
Important Note: We are NOT planning on inviting 8th grade students into live Zoom classes. Our teachers are facing challenging enough circumstances already without the added logistics of welcoming visitors.
Currently 8th grade students and families can register via the SHADOW PAGE of the Sequoia HS website and THIS REGISTRATION FORM. The registration (as in years past) asks for shadow curricular and extracurricular interests. Based on this information, the shadow with one of our hosts. The host will then have a prescribed set of steps that they take
Email a general letter introducing themselves and "welcoming" the shadow
Providing three video links (Virtual Orientation, About Sequoia and the 2020 Virtual Lib Dub)
Providing electronic copies of resources (important list of contacts, campus map, social media accounts to follow, course preference form, other materials from the program planning handbook, etc)
Details about supplemental informational events (IB Info Night, Open House, 8th Grade Welcome Night, etc.)
As part of their registration, shadows/parents will also be asked for their preferred method of contact (phone call to student, phone call to parent, text message, zoom, FaceTime, etc.) Sequoia host students will reach out via the preferred medium, as well as provide contact information for any necessary follow up.
We will also provide
Student Panels - Subject-specific student panel sessions will be held weekly (Wednesday, 2:00 PM) and cover a range of topics.
Parent Informational Sessions - Modeled to mimic the in-person sessions we held each shadow day in years past. I'll host these sessions (45 minute target... stretch to 60 minutes if necessary). I'll be joined by 2-3 volunteers from the PTSA who can provide input from a parent perspective on the Sequoia experience. We will offer both morning and evening sessions.
Here is the link to all of the upcoming sessions.
