Alder Weekly Update
Week of February 14, 2021
Message from the Principal
Hello Students, Parents, and Staff!
I hope that everyone is doing well. Coming out of a successful week of conferences last week, we came into a new set of challenges with inclement weather this week! Who would have thought that a snow day does not mean a day off, but a day of virtual learning. In a way, it is bittersweet as snow days were always a good time and students had school these days virtually. The positive is that we maintained instruction while keeping everyone safe from being on the roads. Also, we hope that parents took advantage of an opportunity to touch base with your child’s teachers and we hope that teachers are exhaling from the busy week of preparing for conferences.
Importantly, we have been adding students back into school for in person learning and also taking requests for students to go to all virtual learning. It is important to get the right fit for your child. We really have missed seeing all of our students, but feel fortunate to see them either in person or virtually. Instruction is continuing at high levels as teachers incorporate technology into lessons more than ever. This week alone I saw teachers employ Jamboards, Kahoot, Edpuzzle, and PearDeck. They are finding ways to assess students in a virtual world and provide interesting learning experiences.
Our Yearbook Advisor, Mrs. Battersby asked me to send a message to you to request pictures for the yearbook. You received that on School Messenger early on in the week. More than ever, we need your help. Any picture that you can share of your child with friends that would enhance our yearbook, please share with us. With sports and activities limited, we would love pictures that show your child with friends in our community. This yearbook will look different than any in previous years. Send any pictures to battersm@eht.k12.nj.us
Any issues with health or Covid symptoms, our school nurse is available as follows:
Melanie Charlton- charltom@eht.k12.nj.us 609-383-3366 ext. 1411
We are looking forward to entering a new week of in person learning. We are here to help, please call if you have any questions or if issues arise in which we can help.
Enjoy your weekend and stay safe!

STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT
GT Classes
COVID-19 cannot stop Lady Justice in 6th grade GT this year! We have moved into our mock trial unit and are beginning to prepare our cases to present in our virtual courtroom. Students began by learning about different types of courts and cases within the court systems of the United States and New Jersey. We then started learning about opening statements and how to write and present them.
Currently, students are writing direct examinations for each of their two witnesses whom they will call to the witness stand. Everyone has done fantastic work so far! Moving forward, we will be learning how to develop and execute a cross examination of a witness, learning how and when to make an objection, and how to write a closing argument. After that, it will be time to head to (virtual) court!
We will have a total of twelve trials at Alder this year. The lawyers from the two sides will each present their case to the jury, who will decide the outcome. The jurors will be selected from a 6th grade class who is invited to attend the trial. Other students in the GT class will serve as the judge, bailiff, and witnesses in each case. Parents, guardians, and friends will be invited to view the trials virtually. The students always do such a great job with it, so you don't want to miss it! We hope to see you in court!
