What is Schizophrenia?
Schizophrenia is a collection of related psychiatric disorders of unknown etiology that follow a specific pattern.The cause of schizophrenia is unknown. Contrary to popular belief, schizophrenia is not a split or multiple personality disease.
Number of People Affected
Schizophrenia afflicts 1% of he world's population, whereas schizotypal personality disorder affects 2%-3%. There are approximately 2.7 million people in the united States of America.
The Three Symptom Types
The three symptoms are positive, negative, and cognitive. Positive symptoms are hallucinations, delusions, and confused thoughts and speech.Negative symptoms are depression, emotionless, withdrawal, struggling with the basics of life, and no following-through. Cognitive symptoms are poor executive functioning, inability to sustain attention, and problems with memory.
