Week 6 Term 2 SFDS Newsletter
St Francis de Sales - 08 June 2021
TRACY'S MESSAGE
Kia Ora Ano
This week we celebrate our support staff…. Suzanne, Fran, Hennie, Robbie, Ida, Maria, Annette, Sam and Tamanda these wonderful team members are true angels.
They support our learners and our Kaiako daily and go above and beyond what their role is to ensure the best for our learners. #Blessed to have everyone of you here at SFDS. Extra smiles for them this week if you see them!
On Friday we had our whole school hui – this is the first in a very long while and our learners were pumped! We will be celebrating these hui fortnightly; it is a fantastic opportunity to come together to pray as a whole school and celebrate our learners.
Congratulations to follow students who received a certificate for showing the value of Gentleness:
Arija J, Isla H, Antonio C, Charlie K, Isaac L, Lilly-Anne M, Jakob R, Rose M, Eva S, Jonathan G, Irene J, Lily RR, Gelila E.
Each Kaiako presents a learner from their class with a certificate for displaying our school weekly value. We also presented our Principal’s Cup to some very innovative ranginui learners Emily R and Izzy S.
We also presented the house cup to Aubert on Friday for being the winning house from our school cross country. The houses collected points for participation and sportsmanship. Well done Aubert! Check out all our amazing learners in the photos following my segment!
We got to practice our singing for our school-parish mass on Sunday, everyone of our learners and staff are so excited for this! So make sure to pop it into your calendar - SFDS Parish Mass this Sunday 13 June at 10:30am. Our expectation is that our learners do come along and be part of this very important Mass. This is a wonderful opportunity to build our community especially with our parish – you will get to make connections and meet new whanau. Chris W is also receiving the Sacrament of Communion - this is very special.
Matariki refers to a cluster of stars also known as Pleiades, or the Seven Sisters. These stars can be seen most of the year, except for a small window at the beginning of the cold months, when they disappear from view. When they reappear in our sky in the middle of winter – we celebrate the beginning of a new year.
Wellingtonians are going to celebrate Matariki in 2021 at the Ahi Kā event on the waterfront on July 2 and 3, featuring ahi (fire), kai (food), storytelling, waiata (song) and entertainment across these two evenings. The Matariki fireworks display on Wellington Harbour will take place at 6.30pm on Saturday 10 July. Make sure that you go and have a look and be part of this wonderful celebration.
I read this saying over the weekend and it resonated with me – sometimes we don’t appreciate what we have until we don’t! Enjoy those small moments with your tamariki and whanau.
‘Life is so ironic. It takes sadness to know what happiness is, noise to appreciate silence, and absence to value presence’
Have a wonderful week.

An email was sent over the weekend to the families with a child/ren who has/have qualified for this event next Tuesday 15 June (postponement Thursday 17 June) at Grenada North Park. A programme of races was attached to the email. There are course maps for the races on this website:
http://www.primarysportwellington.org.nz/PSW-Events/Crosscountry
It would be a good idea for your runner/s to have a look at their course prior to race day. We will have a bus to transport the kids to and from school. However, if you are going to transport your child/ren yourself (either one way or both), then please let me know by Friday 11 June what your plans are so that we can plan accordingly.
Netball superfan meets her Pulse heroes
Netball superfan 10-year-old Maeve HC got a taste of the action when she met the superstars of netball on centre court at TSB Arena before the Pulse vs Magic ANZ Premiership game.
Maeve, who is in Year 6 lives for the netball season and was over the moon to have won the chance to meet captains Claire Kersten (Pulse) and Sam Winders (Magic) and lead the teams onto the court as a part of the ANZ Future Captains programme.
When Mum, Emma, broke the news to Maeve, she couldn’t believe her ears. “I was like ‘what? How? I can’t wait, oh my gosh!’ I love the Pulse, I've been watching and supporting them for a really long time,” said Maeve.
The rush of standing next to the captains and meeting the teams was a highlight for Maeve. She said, “I was really nervous to stand centre court but so happy at the same time. It was amazing getting a photo and high fiving the whole team. I was like ‘dang it, now it's all over.’ But then we got really good seats right next to the Pulse players and we got to watch a great game.”
ANZ Head of Sponsorship Sue McGregor says ANZ is committed to its support of netballers in Aotearoa from local Wellington players right up to the elite athletes in the ANZ Premiership and the Silver Ferns.
“That’s why we’re giving 94 young people from all over Aotearoa the chance to be part of the ANZ Premiership and to meet their netball heroes as an ANZ Future Captain. After such a tough year for the netball community in 2020, it’s great we can offer this once in a lifetime opportunity to our country's youngest netball fans and players. We hope this experience inspires them to remain passionate about their training and to try their very best on the court.”
Applications for the ANZ Future Captains programme are now open at anzcourtside.co.nz
