From the Office of the Superintendent 10/23/19
Weekly Briefing for ISD 709 Faculty & Staff
Dear Colleagues,
This week saw weather that brought flooding to areas of town, fallen trees, loss of power at many of our schools, and even snapped the flagpole in half at Lincoln Park Middle School! It is a good reminder that severe weather should always be taken seriously. I'm proud of the way our schools, programs, transportation and facilities staff responded, thank you for your good work!
Speaking of weather changes, evenings and mornings get colder as winter finds its way back into the Northland and puddles seem to turn to ice patches before we know it! Please keep safety in mind as slips and falls are among the most common causes of injury. If you notice an icy area please report it so maintenance staff can take care of it.
Kind Regards,
Bill

Members of the Hunter Fronden family presented $3,000 to Sources of Strength during the October Duluth School Board meeting. Funds were collected through Skate for 8, an event dedicated to providing financial assistance for local youth programs that support mental health awareness and suicide prevention. Sources of Strength is a suicide prevention program in Denfeld and Duluth East High Schools.
Hunter Fronden passed away from suicide in April of 2018. Skate for 8 was started by his father, Erick, and by parents of kids his son had grown up and skated with.
Depression, suicidal thoughts, anxiety, stress or other concerns can come on suddenly, or so slowly they can be hard to see. One clear indicator is when a child or young person’s emotions or substance use interferes with their ability to be successful at home, school or in the community.
By knowing more about developing symptoms, or early warning signs, steps can be taken to reduce the severity of an illness—and possibly even delay or prevent a major mental illness altogether. If signs or symptoms are occurring, a serious condition may be developing. If you see warning signs, please don’t ignore them.

Minnesota Schools on Front Line of Vaping Epidemic
School administrators from Denfeld & Duluth East speak to the challenge of vaping in schools in a recent Star Tribune report. According to the article, the number of students vaping in Minnesota high schools is soaring. A new survey of students by the state’s Health Department shows that more than a quarter of Minnesota 11th-graders reported vaping at least once in the last month — a 54% increase from 2016, when the survey was last administered.
Star Tribune ArticleChemistry students from Duluth East & Denfeld celebrate Mole Day together with interactive experiments & cinnamon rolls! A big thank you to our chemistry teachers, food service staff & building engineer for making it happen!
OK, so, what's Mole Day? An unofficial holiday celebrated on October 23, between 6:02AM and 6:02PM [1][2] making the date 6:02H 10/23. The time and date are derived from the Avogadro number, which is approximately 6.02×1023, defining the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole (mol) of substance, one of the seven base SI units (Wikipedia).
