Welcome Back to School

Dear Glengary Families,

On behalf of the staff of Glengary Elementary School, welcome back to the 2021-2022 school year. I hope that everyone remains healthy and that you had time to relax and enjoy the summer with family and friends. This year marks my sixth at Glengary and my thirteenth in education. I look forward to serving our students, staff, and community again this year. It will be an outstanding year full of academic and social success.

Glengary works very hard to create meaningful relationships with our students and families. Getting to know all of our students and families is a top priority. We look forward to your partnership and thank you for your help in making this school year a success!

Warmly,

RosaLeigh Johnson, Principal

Items to Complete Before School Starts

Big picture

All Families MUST Complete the Online Back to School Registration Packet

Each school year, parents/guardians must complete our back-to-school “packet” on Skyward Family Access (also referred to as registration). This is different than enrollment and is required for both new and previous students. Parents/guardians update student information, emergency contacts, and provide other information.

Walled Lake Schools has streamlined the annual registration/first-day packet process for ALL K-12 families. The District will be using the Family Access/Skyward system to automate the process for updating and completing documents.

Skyward Family Access is how parents access the back-to-school packet.

A Skyward Family Access parent account is required in order to complete the Online Back-to-School Packet process for all schools. (A parent account username is alphanumeric - SMITHMAD000; a student account username is the student's ID number - 1234567.) To obtain a Family Access account, email familyaccess@wlcsd.org from your email account on file with the district or call 248-956-2190 (email is best). Please include ALL of the following information in the body of your message. You will be contacted within 3 business days.

  • Guardian Name
  • Your student name(s) and name of schools they attend in Walled Lake Schools
  • Guardian's email address currently on file with the district
  • Daytime phone number

Back-to-School Family Access Packet

MUST BE COMPLETED BY ALL STUDENTS PRIOR TO THE START OF THE SCHOOL YEAR. You will not receive your child's classroom placement until the Family Access Packet is complete.

Enrollment

All new families should complete the online enrollment process ASAP. You will receive an email confirmation once your enrollment has been processed.

It is very IMPORTANT that new families enroll ASAP. Each new enrollment impacts class sizes and the number of sections per grade. If you know of any families in the Glengary attendance area with incoming kindergarten or new students, please encourage them to register ASAP.

If you have questions about enrollment, please contact Student Services at 248-956-2085 or 248-956-2086. You can also contact our main office for help.

Dismissal Plan for 2021-2022

Part of the back-to-school packet requires each family to complete a Dismissal Form to let us know your child's dismissal routine. This is a very important form that must be completed for each student. Please be sure you have either completed the form via the back-to-school online registration packet or by using the link below.

Thank you for your help with this task!

Welcome Message from New PTA President, Alison Burke

I am Alison Burke and I am your new PTA President! As a working mom of 3, (with a first grader and older daughters entering Sophomore and Senior years at Northern), I appreciate how fast time goes and that there are only a few opportunities we have help enrich our children’s educational experience. The PTA has been a way for me to be involved at the school and with the community, get to know the people they are spending so much time with and have a say in the events they are participating in. I was an active member of the PTA for my daughters (at Guest) and have planned many events over the years. I was so excited about the events and fundraising that happened year last year – even with all of the restrictions – that I wanted to be part of the experience. I look forward to working with as many of you as I can! I am hoping for a year full of events and fundraising for our school and building on our amazing community.

Therapy Dog Update!

Romeo, Glengary's first ever therapy dog, was born in October 2020. He moved in with his trainer in late November and is currently hard at work completing his training. We anticipate that Romeo will join our school community later this fall!

Romeo is a purebred chocolate lab, bred specifically to be a therapy dog in schools. Research has shown that therapy dogs within a school setting not only enhance skills such as reading, but also improve emotional development. Just the presence of a therapy dog can decrease anxiety and enable students to work through issues such as anger management and other social difficulties. Introducing a non-threatening therapy dog into our school will be a key tool for forming social interactions for many of our students. Reading skills are often associated with improved academic performance and positive attitudes about school in children. Research has found that animal-assisted intervention in the form of reading aloud to a dog in a classroom setting contributes to improved skills and attitudes. There are so many benefits for a school to have its own therapy dog! We have been fortunate to witness these benefits at Mary Helen Guest Elementary and Walled Lake Western High School. Both schools have very successful therapy dog programs.

For any new Glengary families, please make us aware if your child has a fear of or allergy to dogs by completing the form below. We will contact you so that we can collaborate and develop a proactive plan to meet your child’s needs.

Positivity Project

Glengary will once again partner with the Positivity Project to help foster character development among our students and instill an Other People Matter Mindset. The Positivity Project is a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to helping America’s youth build stronger relationships by recognizing the character strengths in themselves and others. The premise is simple, but the results will be profound. Together, we will help create stronger citizens and leaders who will enhance our communities and country by internalizing the belief that “Other People Matter.”

Throughout the school year, we will use positive psychology to teach 24 character strengths. Each week, I will share resources about each strength so that you are able to reinforce this important learning at home! This week, students will begin to learn about what it means to have an Other People Matter Mindset.

21-22 P2 Calendar

Consider printing the calendar to help keep track of the character strengths we will learn each week!

Health and Safety Updates

A message from Superintendent Gutman:

Dear Parents,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer, especially after the challenging times we all experienced over the last couple of school years. As we look forward to welcoming you back for the 2021-2022 school year, it is important to share some information relative to our plans for a more “normal” year.

As you know, over the last year we instituted safety measures based upon recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, and the Oakland County Health Division. We have reviewed the current recommendations and, having now had significant experience in navigating our previous safety measures, we are prepared to return to normalcy. To that end:

  • Masks are recommended but not required;
  • We will not continue with close contact quarantining;
  • Student athletes will not be tested for COVID; and,
  • Vaccines are not required for school attendance.

We will continue to report any COVID-19 cases to the Oakland County Health Department as required, and we expect that students and staff who are symptomatic or who test positive will stay home for their safety and the safety of others.

As we return to our normal school days/hours/procedures and we abandon utilizing dividers between our children, please know that the well-being of our entire school community remains our priority, and we will continue to monitor COVID-19 cases, follow the law, and continue to evaluate any future recommendations. Additional information regarding the upcoming school year is outlined in this FAQ, also listed on our website.

As always we appreciate your support and partnership on behalf of our children, and we look forward to a wonderful school year. I hope you enjoy the remainder of your summer!

Superintendent of Schools

HEALTH SCREENING BEFORE YOU COME TO SCHOOL

We continue to urge all families to check your child's health daily and make decisions that will help ensure we keep our students, staff and community healthy and safe.

Daily Health Checks: Please check your child(ren) daily for ANY signs of illness before attending school. Check for the following symptoms:

  • Fever/Chills
  • Cough
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath/difficulty breathing
  • Muscle of Body Aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of smell or taste
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion
  • Runny Nose
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Diarrhea

If your child has any of these symptoms, please err on the side of caution and keep them home until they are feeling better! We appreciate your partnership as we continue to work together to keep our community healthy and safe!

Authorization to Administer Medication Form

If your child needs to have medication administered at school, parents must complete an AUTHORIZATION to ADMINISTER MEDICATION FORM.

Please click on the link to view. Print out and complete the form. Please drop it off at our main office as soon as possible. You can also email it to our secretaries Cheryl Maten or Melissa Roth.

Cheryl Maten - cherylmaten@wlcsd.org

Melissa Roth- melissaroth@wlcsd.org

Voluntary Student Accident Insurance

WALLED LAKE CONSOLIDATED SCHOOLS DOES NOT CARRY HEALTH OR ACCIDENT INSURANCE FOR STUDENTS. If your child is injured while at school, medical costs are the responsibility of the parents and/or guardians.

As a service to students and their families, our District is making available a student accident insurance plan for your child at a very nominal cost. The District offers this program because of trends in rising family health and dental insurance costs, increased deductibles, co-payments or lack of health or dental insurance coverage.

REASONS TO PURCHASE THIS COVERAGE:

  1. Deductible and co-pays in your health plan. Many health plans have increased the amount of out-of-pocket expenses.
  2. No insurance.

This plan will provide benefits for medical expenses incurred because of an accident. If you have other insurance, benefits can be applied to your deductible or co-pay. If you have no other insurance, this will become your primary accident plan.

Food Service Information

For the 2021-22 school year, breakfast and lunch is free for all students. If you would normally fill out a form to receive free or reduced lunch, we ask that you do so for accounting purposes. Forms are available on the district food service web page.

Below you will find the breakfast and lunch menus for August and September. You will also find the contact information for our Food Service Department.

NATIONAL SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM – SEAMLESS SUMMER OPTION LETTER TO HOUSEHOLDS

Dear Parent or Guardian:

We are pleased to inform you that Walled Lake Consolidated Schools will be participating in the Seamless Summer Option as part of the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Programs for the School Year 2021-2022.

The GREAT NEWS is that ALL students enrolled at our school can receive a healthy breakfast and lunch at NO CHARGE to your household each day.

We still need your household to fill out and sign the Free and Reduced-Price Meal Application. This information is critical in determining the amount of money that our school receives from a variety of State and Federal supplemental programs like Title I A, At-risk (31a), Title II A, E-Rate, etc.

These supplemental programs have the potential to offer supports and services for our students including, but not limited to:

• Instructional supports (staff, supplies & materials, etc.)

• Non-instructional services (counseling, social work, health services, etc.)

• Professional Learning for staff

• Parent and Community engagement supplies and activities

• Technology

• Pandemic-EBT

We are asking that you please complete and submit it as soon as possible to ensure that additional funding for our school is available to meet the needs of our students. All information on the application submitted is confidential. Without your assistance in completing and returning the attached application, our school cannot maximize the use of available State and Federal funds.

If we can be of any further assistance, please contact us at Anne Merchant at 248-956-3081 or at annemerchant@wlcsd.org.

Sincerely,

Julie Fortner
