Miss Foster's Fabulous First Grade
March 2020 Newsletter
What's happening in first grade?
We have recently started to learn how to collect, analyze and display data through different types of graphs. The students had an opportunity to create their own survey questions and poll their classmates - it has been so much fun! Additionally, we are working on learning more about measuring with nonstandard units. We've learned several measuring tips such as measuring from endpoint to endpoint, measuring in a straight line, and not leaving any gaps or overlaps.
Finally, we will begin to look at place value next and learn how to add and subtract two-digit numbers as well as learn how to tell time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock.
Reading: We have been working on synthesizing a text, doing things like using story details to retell a story, discussing how a problem was solved, and finding similarities and differences in two texts. We have also learned how to analyze a text to determine if it is fiction or nonfiction, and we learned about several text features in a nonfiction book such as headings, a table of contents, glossary, index, captions, labels and much more!
Next, we will work more on predicting and citing evidence from the text to support or negate our predictions. We will also become reading detectives as we learn how to infer using clues from the text and pictures.
Writing: We are finishing learning how to write about our opinions of our favorite and least favorite things including reasons to support our opinions. Next, we'll explore several types of poetry. We will use our senses to help us write and will learn about alliteration, similes, and what an onomatopoeia is!
Finally, we are going to begin learning how to write informational pieces. We will work hard on writing "How To" Books. The students get to pick something they know how to do and write step-by-step directions that instruct someone else. We will connect this learning to what we know about following recipes or putting together a new toy! The children will also learn more about using sequential terms in their writing such as first, next, then and last.
Science and Social Studies: In science, we are finishing up our unit on solids and liquids. After that we will begin our next Social Studies unit where we will be learning about China. We'll learn about symbols of China, the geography, government and much more!

This fun app has a free version and a paid version. On the free version, children are able to practice identifying their sight words on several varying degrees of difficulty. I love this app because it can be adapted to meet the needs of all of our first graders!
