CHS DRAMA ATTENDS AZ STATE THESPIAN FESTIVAL
This past week, our drama club attended the AZ State Thespian Festival. It was an incredible conference where our students attended workshops, watched plays, competed in technical theatre events, worked for scholarships, and competed in the one act competition. Here are some highlights:
-Our troupe was named a Gold Honor Troupe by AZ Thespians.
-Our troupe achieved the title of All-State Superior Troupe by AZ Thespians.
-Three students received a total of 31 callbacks from colleges for scholarships. This essentially makes them finalists for positions with those colleges, and they will now follow up to secure positions and scholarships with those schools.
-Emily Solomon was named a finalist for AZ Thespian Theatre Scholarships.
-Our first tech challenge team in two years competed and performed well.
-Our One Act play received a Superior ranking, the highest ranking available.
MEET MS. WIRKUS
OPIODS PRESENTATION
Today, Assistant U.S. Attorneys Don Pashayan and Thomas Forsyth, as well as DEA Agent Michael Brown shared potentially life-saving information with Combs High School students about the tragic impact of opioid usage, addiction and the increasing threat of fentanyl in our community. They shared real life examples of local cases in which teenagers and young adults have died after unknowingly ingesting fentanyl and other opioids. Their goal is to empower students with information that can help them avoid the very real threat of opioid usage, addiction and death.
COUNSELORS CORNER
Did you know? Our Medical Professions CTE Course, taken Junior and Senior years, give students the opportunity to earn certification as a Nursing Assistant (CNA) or Licensed Nursing Assistant (LNA) AND the opportunity for dual credit with Central Arizona College. Med Pro students get the chance to try their skills in the classroom, through clinicals, and have even tested their skills on some of our staff members as they learn to take blood pressure or shave a patient.
Many of our former Medical Professions students have gone on to work in hospitals, nursing homes, and other care facilities, making above minimum wage and doing what they love to do. Even better is that most of these same students are now working toward their certification as Registered Nurses, and the boost they get from certifying into the health field while in high school is immeasurable.
Upcoming Events:
- November 22: Parent University - Ending the Silence for Families, a focus on stressors and mental health issues that today's students are facing
- December 2: Arizona State University Field Trip
- December 20: Final day of Semester 1
- January 8 and 9: ASVAB for all Seniors and any interested Juniors. This test will help students discover and understand their strengths and where those strengths can be turned into careers and other opportunities. The ASVAB is administered by the military with no strings attached.
- January 10: Elevate 4 Tomorrow conference for Juniors
