GROWING GREAT LEADERS
On Friday last week we held a Student Leadership Training Day to begin preparing our students for their crucial role supporting our Year 9 students in 2023. With Mrs Barr, Mr Barr, Ms Wildash and Mr Te Kurapa supporting our students they learnt and built on many interpersonal skills such as effective communication that will enable them to best support our Year 9 students in 2023.
All Year 12 students have been invited. Students who are applying for student leadership positions in 2023 are expected to be there and their work on this day will support their application. Thank you to Paul Barr for his work organising this day and to those staff who will be supporting us. Please see Amy if you have any questions.
TRIDENT 12TH ANNUAL CUPCAKE DAY
Trident celebrated the 12th Cupcake Day on Wednesday, where our staff and students baked, sold and ate cupcakes to raise funds for our local animal rescue groups. We sold 200 cupcakes and raised $500.
Harmony and Hope (Whakatane), KTown Caw (Kawerau), All Paws Count (Murupara) and OSCA (Opotiki) will each receive $125 from Trident.
We are humbled by our wonderful students and staff - once again the cupcakes were stunning and our whanau contributed to helping our local animal rescue organizations
SPECIAL EDCUCATION CENTRE SUPPORTING OUR COMMUNITY - HALO WHAKATĀNE
What a fantastic contribution our Special Education Centre students made to our community! Way to go team! Special education students from Trident High School removed close to 300 kilograms of rubbish from Otamakaokao Awatapu Lagoon this week.
HALO Whakatāne’s education programme ‘Te Whakaora i Te Mauri o Te Repo’ aims at restoring the mauri, or life force, of the Otamakaokao Awatapu Lagoon. Trident Highschool’s Special Education class has once again done a brilliant job at lifting the mauri of the lagoon in celebration of Keep New Zealand Beautiful’s Clean Up Week.
In recent weeks visitors to the shared pathway backing onto Riverside Drive have been noticing poorly hidden piles of household renovation waste. Students from a range of schools visiting the lagoon with HALO Whakatāne have remarked on the thoughtlessness of this illegal dumping.
Students were in and out of the bush leaving no stone unturned removing litter from the area. Empowered with gloves and rubbish picker-uppers they spent an hour hauling out an incredible 270kg of rubbish. The majority was a mix of plaster board, pink batts, skirting boards (including nails), building offcuts, paint cans and bricks.
With the recently installed bins at either end of the lagoon hopefully next year there will be a lot less rubbish for our students to remove from this special area.

WHITEBAIT RESTORATION DAY 7th OCTOBER
The BOP Regional Council and the Department of Conservation are running a kaitiakitanga whitebait restoration day on the Whakatane Awa.
This is an all-ages event and a great opportunity to meet Wetland Restoration Ecologist Peter Ellery, (also the lead designer for the ponds) who will be a guest speaker.
The amount of native adult freshwater fish in our rivers is declining. This is likely due to a combination of factors including habitat destruction and fishing pressure on the juveniles ( whitebait).
Come along and help enhance this habitat for them by mulching plants and recking water weeds. This will ensure the future fish numbers in our awa is high. It also gives us a chance to hear your ideas about this area and any other whitebait restoration sites which you might have in mind.
Friday 7th October: 10am - 12pm
Address: end of Ferry Road, near James St / Mananui Dairy
