What are the mumps?

The mumps or also known as epidemic parotitis is a viral infection that that causes painful swelling of the salivary glands.

How do the mumps spread and how can we prevent them?

The mumps are spread by droplets of saliva or mucus from the mouth,nose,or throat of an infected person,usually when the person coughs, sneezes,or talks. Some symptoms are fever as high of 103 to 104 degrees in fahrenheit,swelling of temples of jaw,and face pain.The most likely people to catch the mumps are children from 2 to 12 year of age but anyone could also catch the mumps.We can prevent the mumps by getting the Measles,Mumps,,and Rubella (MMR) vaccine.

How to treat The mumps

Some ways that you can treat the mumps are :

  • put ice or heat packs on the swollen checks
  • Drink plenty of fluids
  • Gargle with warm salt water several times a day
