WYWLA WEEKLY UPDATE
SUNDAY, MAY 3, 2020
Greetings!
We hope all of our WYWLA families are doing well. This week is Teacher Appreciation Week. Please take a moment to show our teachers your appreciation.
We are nearing the end of our school year. Friday, May 22, 2020 will be here soon. We are thinking about our 8th graders who will be transitioning to high school, and our seniors, the Class of 2020, who will be leaving the nest and moving on to college. Although we will not have our usual end-of-year celebrations, we are working to make sure these students end the year with the recognition they deserve. Stay tuned!
We will send information to our families about end-of-year closing activities as soon as we have more information regarding the state stay-at-home restrictions. We are planning to schedule dates and times for students to clean out lockers, return textbooks, library books, laptops, drop off used uniforms, and pick up yearbooks.
Please continue to monitor district update. Click here to view all updates.
Please encourage your daughter to stay engaged and focused to minimize learning gaps when she transitions to the next grade level.
Sincerely,
Principal CJB

FROM THE PTSA
Teacher Appreciation Week Starts Monday May 4!!
Student videos deadline extended to Tuesday May 5. Encourage your student to record a 20-30 second video tribute for her teachers. Something sweet, touching, funny, admiring, or any combination! Depending on your student’s grade, she should use the appropriate drop box as shown below. Tyla Lynch will put them together. Thank you Tyla. It’s your directorial debut!! You may contact Tyla with question at tyladaylee@gmail.com. AND, Check this out! From time to time, the PTSA surveys teachers and staff about their favorite things. Here are the results. Let it help you do something extra thoughtful. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1y58IA9fbL2SrW_UNs7kXgsdclIcOcjqZMITsrWnET88/edit#gid=801126174

Uniform Resale
A new challenge, but we’re determined! The PTSA sees it as a duty to offer families less expensive uniform options. And, the usual June resale is cancelled. Ugh. Last week I blabbed on and on about a Plan B. Then, enter Cari Boram! She manages logistics professionally, and she is at the ready! Plan C sounds more like this: parents will bring used uniforms to main campus and drop them off during the designated dates for the end-of-year closing procedures. Since we don’t have a new date, uniforms must also be laundered, labeled with sizes, and bagged. We will reach out later for volunteers to help us sort.
Senior Scholarships
Senior Scholarship forms have all been submitted! Many thanks to the Scholarship Committee – Val Cruz, Phyllis Kennel, and Sherine Moghazi. I am so excited to find out which seniors were awarded. I’ll let you all know as soon as I do.
PTSA New Leadership
Exciting news! Lynette Zarrett has been nominated for Vice President of the WYWLA PTSA. She’s the real deal. She spent two years as PTA President at Middle Creek Elementary, and prior to that, she served as VP of Communications. You may have seen her around school at just about every event. You see, she’s also the PTSA photographer! Wow. Now I’m worried about my job security! Thank you Lynnette for accepting the nomination.
Upcoming PTSA Meetings
Via Zoom! Tuesdays 5/19 and 6/16, 5-6pm. Both meetings will be General Meetings where PTSA members can conduct business and vote. Specifically, Board elections and budget approval. Twenty members are required for a quorum. Encourage your student to listen in! The Zoom meeting ID, etc. will be emailed directly from Ms. Jernigan, and also from me via Memberhub on Tuesday about 3pm. If you don’t receive it, email me directly. Check out meeting minutes, financial reports, agenda, etc. here: https://wywlaptsa.memberhub.com/files
My favorite part of the meeting is The Principals Report. Principal Jernigan-Baker shares News You Can Use and answers your questions. Don’t miss it. She reports first on the agenda. Seriously, tune in!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. CALL OR WRITE ANY TIME.

The Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award Program
It’s What You Do That Counts! Are you a young woman between the ages of 14 and 18 who volunteers in your community or school? Who sees challenges instead of obstacles? Hope instead of despair? If you are a young woman who believes in the power of volunteer action, then you may be eligible to win a Soroptimist Violet Richardson Award. The Violet Richardson Award recognizes young women who make the community and world a better place through volunteer efforts such as: fighting drugs, crime and violence; cleaning up the environment;and working to end discrimination and poverty. Volunteer actions that benefit women or girls are of particular interest.
Soroptimist is an organization of women whose members volunteer in their communities, often working on the same problems that you do. Although we realize that volunteering is its own reward, we also know it feels good to be recognized for your actions. And that’s why we sponsor this award.
Additional Notes to share:
- This is not a scholarship award but students must be in good academic standing
- The age range this year is different because of the date this is going out to students. The age range is girls 14 -18 we do want Seniors to apply even if they have already turned 18
- Questions and completed applications need to be sent to my email. Applications are due by midnight on May 8, 2020.
If you think you would make a good Violet Richardson Award candidate, please complete this application and tell us about your volunteer action. Send it to the local Soroptimist club listed on the application. Download the application below.
