Shout Outs!
Do you want to give a huge pat on the back to a Temple ISD teacher, administrator or staff member?
Here's the place to do it!!
Samantha Patterson gets a SHOUT OUT!
I'd like to commend Samantha Patterson (Kennedy-Powell 5th Grade Math/Science Teacher) for her patience, enthusiasm, and knowledge of 5th grade happenings. I am a new teacher to Temple and she has gone above-and-beyond to help prepare me for the school year. She is open to suggestions and accepting of my new, yet limited ideas. Her patience for each student is evident in her many hours of preparation as well as organization of her classroom. Speaking of her classroom, it is adorable. Samantha claims to being a "Work Horse" and makes me want to be a better teacher! - Michelle Hall
Congratulations Kristin Childress!

ATTENDANCE is IMPORTANT
Parents, did you know…
· Students should miss NO MORE than 9 days of school in the entire school year to be successful and stay on track for graduation?
· By 6th grade absenteeism is one of the 3 signs that a student may drop out of high school?
· Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with work, or facing other difficulties?
· At the High School/Middle School level your child’s attendance is taken by period; therefore, arriving after half of the class period, missing classes, or leaving early will result in an absence?
· At the Elementary level if your child arrives after the official accounting time they are considered absent?
· Missing 10 percent, or about 18 days, which is only on average 2 days a month can drastically affect your child’s academic success?
· Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate and keep a job?
What can you do to help?
· Set a regular bed time and morning routine and STICK TO IT.
· Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.
· Talk about the importance of school. Make attendance the expectation.
· Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick.
· Have a back-up plan for getting to school if something comes up (family, neighbor, friend).
· Try to schedule appointments after school hours. If unable, have student in school before/following appointment.
· If your child seems anxious about going to school, take them to school and talk to teachers, school counselors, administrators, and/or truancy officers. Remember attendance is the expectation.
Many different studies have been done to determine student success in classes and testing; as it turns out, the best predictor comes from a combination of just two indicators – grades and attendance!
Texas State Law (HB2398)
· Defines truancy as 10 or more unexcused absences, days or parts of days.
· Defines a child as 6 – 18 years old.
· Criminal charges may be filed against the parent with fines from $100 -$500.
· Civil charges may be filed against students 12 – 18 years old.
· States that: “It is the parent’s duty to monitor your child’s attendance and require your child to attend school; and to request a conference between school officials and the parent to discuss absences.”
Temple Independent School District wants to partner with you for your child. Always feel free to contact your child’s school for additional support.
