MORE THAN 100 ATTEND HIGH SCHOOL ORIENTATION NIGHT
Thank you to the more than 100 parents and students who attended the orientation program for next year’s incoming 9th grade at the high school!
STUDENTS, STAFF PRESENT AT HIGH SCHOOL FAIR
Eighth graders from the Wynantskill Union Free School District attended the annual High School Fair to learn about their options for next year. Students have a choice to make between attending Averill Park CSD, East Greenbush CSD, Brunswick CSD and Troy CSD.
BOWLING TEAM HELPS NEW HORIZONS
The boys and girls bowling teams brought in supplies for the New Horizons Club to send to the Dominican Republic!
JOE MILANESE NAMED TO ALL-STATE FOOTBALL TEAM
Congratulations to senior Joe Milanese for being named to the 2019 Class A NYSSWA All-State Football Team! Joe was named a Sixth Team Defensive Back, helping lead the Warriors to a 5-4 record this season.
STUDENTS GET IN FRONT OF CAMERA FOR ADVOCACY FORUM
Students at Averill Park High School worked with our Communications Specialist and Questar III BOCES to record and produce a video letting our local legislators know why they should maintain funding streams for public education!
GAME-A-THON HELD AT AMS
At the Game-A-Thon, AMS students gathered in the cafeteria to play a variety of games for this year's library fundraiser. Library Helpers and members of the Game Club volunteered their time to help out.
GRADUATION RATE RISES TO NEW HEIGHTS
Graduation rates at Averill Park High School continue to rise to new heights. The New York State Education Department released its high school graduation rates for the 2018-19 school year and Averill Park saw an increase from the previous year, setting a new district record in the process. AUTHOR, NEWS ANCHOR VISITS PES
News anchor and author, John Gray, visited Poestenkill Elementary School on Friday morning to read his latest book “Keller's Heart”. The story is about two special friends, a girl and a fluffy dog, who rescue each other. John's message reinforced being accepting of each other and appreciating the unique qualities of others. INDOOR TRACK SETS 3 NEW SCHOOL RECORDS
Three new Averill Park CSD school records were set for indoor track and field at the New Balance Games. Check out the records broken here.
FAMILIES, STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN MLK DAY OF SERVICE
Many APCSD families joined together to volunteer for the District's annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service. Among the many activities completed, families prepared meals for shelter residents, made care packages for soldiers, assembled coloring kits and Valentine's Day kits for hospitalized children, and created treats and toys for rescue dogs.
AUTHOR RYAN SMITHSON VISITS WSL K-KIDS
West Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids enjoyed a visit from guest speaker Ryan Smithson. Mr. Smithson is a veteran and a local author who wrote the book "Ghosts of War: The True Story of a 19-Year-Old GI." His presentation about Veterans Day and his personal story captivated the K-Kids!
AMS STUDENTS GET CREATIVE, DONATE TO HUMANE SOCIETY
Students at Algonquin Middle School stayed after school to make dog and cat toys and blankets to donate to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society!
WSL K-KIDS CREATE CARDS FOR 104-YEAR-OLD VETERAN
West Sand Lake Elementary K-Kids wrote Valentine's Day cards for Retired Maj. Bill White, a World War II veteran. Major White is 104 years old.
COACH PUGLIESE EARNED WIN NO. 200
Boys varsity basketball coach, Dave Pugliese, picked up his 200th career victory in a 59-49 win over Hudson Falls on Jan. 22.
KAY TICHY WINS NAT GEO BEE
Students at Algonquin Middle School participated in the National Geographic Bee. Congratulations to 8th grader Kay Tichy, who was the school winner!
WRESTLING TEAM HELPS SPREAD WILL POWER
The Averill Park and Burnt Hills wrestling teams came together to spread Will Power last night! The goal was to raise awareness and give hope to families dealing with terminal illness in the name of the Brave Will foundation. Learn more about the foundation at bravewill.org
STUDENTS PERFORM AT ALL-COUNTY FESTIVAL
Congratulations to all students who participated in the 2020 RCSMA All County Festival! This year's festival featured HS Band, HS Orchestra, HS Mens Choir, Junior Choir and Elementary Band. The students rehearsed and performed with other honored musicians from area schools under the direction of esteemed guest conductors, culminating in a concert on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Lansingburgh High School. GIRLS BASKETBALL HOLDS TEACHER APPRECIATION NIGHT
The Averill Park varsity girls basketball program held its Teacher Appreciation Night and AP Youth Basketball Night. To see all of the teachers honored during the night, click here.
ROBOTICS CLUB COMPETES AT BOTS TAKE BURGH
The Averill Park High School Robotics Club competed at the fifth annual Bots Take Burgh VEX Robotics Challenge at Lansingburgh High School. The event acted as a state qualifier. Great job by everyone who participated!
SWING DANCE RAISES MONEY FOR APHS MUSIC DEPARTMENT
The Averill Park Music Department held a Swing Dance at the high school! The Georgie Wonders Orchestra kept everyone on their feet after a dance lesson that was provided by Ron Tritto, of Learntadance Studios. It was a wonderful night of dancing and music!
AMS STUDENTS VIDEO CONFERENCE WITH RPI
AMS TEAM students had a video conference with RPI & were shown The Forge! This is where RPI has its 3-D printers & laser cutter. Students learned about current uses for 3-D printers, careers in the expanding field and were able to ask questions!
ROBERT JONES, JOE MANFRED ENLIST IN MILITARY
Two students enlisted in the military recently. Robert Jones is heading into the Army National Guard while Joe Manfred is embarking on a journey with the Navy.
FORUM ON SUSTAINABILITY OF SCHOOLS IS WELL-ATTENDED
Ten area school districts, including Averill Park CSD, were represented at the Forum on Sustainability of Schools at Columbia High School on Thursday, Jan. 30. Area legislators attended the presentation, listened to school administrators and students, and answered a variety of questions about declining state aid and school budgets.
PES TASTE TESTERS APPROVE NEW MENU ITEMS
Poestenkill Elementary is piloting a "Try It Tuesday" program to gather feedback on potential new menu items! In January, students sampled and voted on Pulled Pork Sliders and Teriyaki Chicken. Both were winners and will be featured on February's lunch menu! The Pulled Pork Sliders will be served with Sweet Potato Fries and Homemade Coleslaw. The Teriyaki Chicken will be served with Brown Rice and Steamed Broccoli.
AUTHOR ERIC LUPER VISITS ALL 3 ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
ELA RESULTS SET THE BAR HIGH
Students and staff in the APHS ELA Department achieved one of our highest-ever passing and mastery rates on the State English Language Arts exam this January! This exam, which is a NYS graduation requirement, is taken each January by all 11th grade students, as well as accelerated 10th grade students. This year, 95% of our students passed the exam, with an amazing 72% of our students achieving mastery (85% or better).
