Staff Professional Development
On Tuesday, November 2, 2021, when students had a NO SCHOOL day, Thomas Staff took time to learn and discuss new approaches to keeping students safe and comfortable. Staff attended a variety of sessions from trauma informed care, to anxiety and self regulation, to brain development. In the above picture, Mrs. LIsa Orem, our GTE Lead Intervention Specialist, and Mrs. Selena Spencer, our GTE School Psychologist, share training on positive behavior incentive strategies (PBIS) used with Pax: The Good Behavior Game.
One strategy is to use a harmonica when gaining attention. It is a very unique sound, rather than clapping, which may be too loud for some, or "shushing," which is hard to hear under a mask.
Granny's Wacky Prizes
These practices support emotional regulation by allowing short breaks in the day. They also build supportive relationships, student to teacher and student to student.
Building Goals
Below you can see these materials. Teachers use Pax sticks with student names to ensure students have an opportunity in turn taking, Pax Voices remind us of voice levels. Tootles are notes we give each other to focus on our positive actions.
Thomas staff is working to support common practice and language in our community. We are in differing places with our Pax implementation journey. Thank you for your patience with this. We will continue to share more with you as we learn:-)
