Pershing Updates

May 31, 2020

Good Evening Pershing Families,

We are down to our last 7 days of school! As we wrap-up this unusual year, I want to thank you for hanging in there with us!

For our 6th graders, and for those of our 5th graders who are moving on to middle school next year, we will miss you so very much! Continue to make your elementary teachers proud as you progress in your education and work towards building your bright future! Remember, once a Panther, always a Panthers!

Report Cards: At Pershing, typically students will bring report cards home in hand on the last day of school. This year, parents will be able to access report cards online through the Parent Portal beginning on June 15th. If you have any problem accessing your child's report card, please reach out to us in the school front office by sending an email to me,, or our school secretary, Elizabeth Danforth, If you have questions regarding the SJUSD Elementary Grading practices during the school closure, you can review it here: Elementary Grading Practices. Below in this newsletter are two tutorials with information on how to access the Portal and Report Cards.

Yearbooks: Yearbooks are being mailed to my home first and have not yet shipped. Due to COVID-19, Lifetouch is down to 30% of their printing and production staff. They have sent us sincere apologies on the delay and they do not have an estimated date for shipping. I will keep families and staff updated as information is made available. In the meantime, if you forgot to order a yearbook, you may reserve your yearbook on a first-come, first-served basis until we run out by completing this form: Yearbooks reserved in this manner will cost $20 cash to be paid on delivery. If the yearbooks arrive after school is over, I will coordinate arrangements to have a pick-up process this summer. We are hearing this is a common challenge, which gives me one more chance to see many of you before next fall! Thank you for your patience.

Mrs. Kendra Shelton, Pershing Principal

Chromebook and material collection is scheduled for Monday, June 8, 2020

With the end of the school year nearly here we are preparing to collect school materials including any loaned Chromebook devices, wireless hotspots, textbooks, library books, classroom materials, teacher loaned books or other school materials that students may have at home. This is also an opportunity for students to pick-up their personal items from the classroom.

On Monday, June 8, families will be invited by the following schedule to return materials as well as collect any personal items that may still be remaining on campus:

8:30a.m. - 9:30a.m.: Last Names that start with A through F

9:30a.m - 10:30a.m.: Last Names that start with G through O

10:30a.m. - 11:30a.m.: Last Names that start with P through Z

Classroom teachers will present during this drop-off and student material pick-up on June 8th and will be at their classroom door. Families will return Chromebooks to the multi-purpose room, library books will be placed in a box outside the library, and textbooks will be returned to classrooms. If you do not have a Chromebook, hotspot, or library book, then go directly to your classroom and wait for your turn. Teachers will be at the classroom door and student items will be in bags labeled in a row outside the classroom. Also, any remaining student medications must be picked up at the office or it will be discarded by Health Services.

If your student has been confirmed to attend a summer school program in the district, they do not need to return Chromebook or hotspot devices. All other students will need to turn their devices in.

While on campus, everyone will be asked to maintain social distancing to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We ask that you stay with your family group and maintain at least 6 feet of distance between other groups. The use of masks is highly encouraged.

School site and district staff are working together to review input from families, students and community members, along with the recommendations and requirements of health officials to determine what next school year will look like. Based upon this feedback we hope to provide a variety of learning options to meet the needs of all of our families and will reissue devices in the next school year, as needed.

If you are unable to pick-up materials on June 8th, you may instead come on Tuesday, June 9th from 8a.m. - 10a.m. Most teachers will not be present. All Chromebook return and pick-up of remaining materials will be in the multi-purpose room on June 9th.
