Bransford Blast
October 1, 2017
Terrific Texan Families,
What an incredible week to be a Bransford Texan! Prize patrol visited classrooms on Tuesday and Thursday and our Texans ran their Laps for Learning inside (see below for more details).
On Monday and Tuesday, Jennifer Unger, a teaching artist with Focus 5, will be visiting classrooms to work with our staff and students. This will be her second visit of four to Bransford to assist us on our arts integration journey. Ask your Texans what they learned with Jennifer in their classroom.
Wednesday is national walk to school day. We'd love to have all of our Texans walking to school on Wednesday. There will be staff meeting buses and others who would like to join at City Park and walking to Bransford. See below for more information.
This week is a short week for our Texans as they have Friday off. Our staff will be engaged in 7 Habits training on Friday. Both our staff and students have next Monday off.
We hope you have a wonderful week!

Laps for Learning
Thank you for supporting Laps for Learning! Friday was a HUGE success! While the weather changed our plans, the students still ran lap after lap earning money for Harmony Park, our musical playground. We appreciate every volunteer who set up inside, lap marker, water station assistant, and all those who worked behind the scenes to make Laps such a success for our students and campus!
Donations will be collected through October 12.

Second Grade Service Project
Second graders have recently adopted a second grade class in in a small Texas town, that was extremely affected by Hurricane Harvey. The school, Mauriceville Elementary, is part of the small school district, Little Cypress-Mauriceville Consolidated ISD. Below is Mrs. Powell’s thoughtful letter explaining the situation in their small town.
Hello!
Thank you for adopting us! I am so thankful that you are able to help. Here's a background on our small town:
We live in a one stop light town called Mauriceville. It's the last town on the border of Texas and Louisiana. We have 1 elementary and 1 middle school. Our sister schools (the Little Cypress side of our district) has the other elementary and middle schools, as well as the jr.
high and high school. 4 out of the 6 schools took on water. We have about 600 students in pre-k to 5th grade (Can you imagine trying to find somewhere to house all those sweet babies?!). Harvey hit, and it continued to rain on our town for about 24 hours without stopping. Our rivers were too full with water, so they released the dams, breaking levees, causing flooding our town has never seen. 90% of homes and small businesses flooded. 80% of those places do not have flood insurance. In pictures, our school had water almost to the rooftops. When we were able to go inside, we had 1-3 feet in different areas of our newly remodeled, and partially newly constructed buildings, included a brand new gym. We have lost all but one book in our library, and all the furniture that we had will be throw away.
But, we are gearing up for our best year ever! We will have class in a local church, shared with our sister schools.
I am one of 4 second grade teachers, and I am Mrs. Powell. We do need books!! Most of us lost our bottom shelf, if not 2 shelves, of books. One teacher lost her entire listening library. If we cannot use them in second grade, I will pass them on to our librarian, where the estimated cost of replacing our library is $250,000. That's a lot of books!
We appreciate your school reaching out to us, and we are so thankful that we have a wonderful support system of educators on our side!

2nd Grade
So, our spectacular second graders would appreciate your participation with donating school supplies between now and October 13. Also, Greysen Parsley, a compassionate 3rd grade BES student, is organizing a Book Drive to support them during the week of October 10-13. Please feel free to drop off any donations in the boxes in the front foyer, OR to make it even easier, Mauriceville Elementary has set up an Amazon account. If you click on this link http://www.amazon.com/registry/wishlist/2CFC8MVRENX5D
and shop, Amazon will send your generous donations directly to them. Thank you for considering helping out this small Texas school, and at the same time teaching our Texans the importance of being a good global citizen and helping others in need!
Look for Greysen and friends, October 10-13, as they collect gently used or new books to send to our new friends at Mauriceville Elementary.
