4TH GRADE VISITS THE FISH HATCHERY
Last Friday the 4th Grade went to the hatchery in Bethel in preparation for raising trout this winter. At the hatchery we had lots of fun learning about trout. Some facts we learned include:
The eggs come out of the female from a small hole near the tail - We watched Paul strip the eggs from the fish
There is a lot of math involved in raising eggs
12,000 eggs were in one tray
In the fall there are no eyed eggs
Trout lay more than 100 eggs - some more than 1000
The eggs are quite small, 100 eggs filled a small container
Gills were red, fleshy, spheres (like potato chips)
Eggs were protected from light by black curtains
Trout get food from the yolk sac when they are in the eyed egg, they still live off it when they hatch
GRADES 2/3 & 4 VISIT MARSH BILLINGS
On Halloween, the second, third and fourth graders went to Marsh Billings Rockefeller National Historic Park. The ⅔ shared their authentic presentations about schools around the world. After that, the ⅔ learned about MBRNHP as an educational facility. The 4th Grade did a mycology walk and learned more about mycelium and how it helps trees communicate with each other. They also identified several types of mushrooms like witches butter, bracket fungi, and British Soldiers.
After lunch, everyone hiked to the Pogue to do some nature journaling.

Pick-Up Basketball for 5th & 6th grades
Hello 5/6 Students and Parents,
The Woodstock Rec Center has reserved the Woodstock Elementary School gym Sundays from 3-5pm starting this Sunday until early December for pick-up basketball. This will be supervised by me and any parents that want to stay and help, but you can also drop off your child.
The goal is to give any kids interested in playing basketball an opportunity to practice their skills and play some fun pick-up games before the start of the regular boys and girls seasons. These will not be formal practices, but we will do some warm-ups, some fun drills, and play games of 2v2, 3v3 and 5v5. Official Rec Center team practices will start in December.
If your child would like to play this Sunday, please email me to let me know they are coming. I will collect emergency contact info at that time.
Thanks,
Matt Stout
