Dear Park Village Families,
I hope this message finds you well and that you enjoyed a restful and joyful winter break with your loved ones. The winter break provided a wonderful opportunity for students and their families to recharge, reflect, and create lasting memories together. Whether you traveled, stayed local, or simply enjoyed some well-deserved downtime, I trust that the break was a time of rejuvenation and connection.
As we return to school, we want to express my gratitude for the incredible support and cooperation we've received from our families throughout the year. Your involvement in your child's education is invaluable, and together, we create a strong foundation for academic success and personal growth.
Our dedicated faculty and staff have been working diligently to ensure a smooth transition back into the school routine. We have exciting plans and engaging activities lined up for the upcoming months, and we encourage all students to approach this semester with enthusiasm and a commitment to learning.
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to reach out to our teachers, staff, or our admin team. Communication is key, and we are here to support both you and your child in their educational journey.
Let's make the remainder of the school year a time of exploration, discovery, and achievement. Thank you for being an integral part of the Park Village community, and we look forward to seeing the continued growth and success of our students.
Wishing you a wonderful start to the new year!
Best,
Amie & Stephanie
Starting the Year off with a Growth Mindset!
Helping Children Cope Effectively With Mistakes
The means by which children understand or respond to mistakes is an integral feature of a growth mindset. It is important for children to learn to attribute mistakes to factors that can be changed, especially in situations in which they are capable of succeeding.
It can be helpful to think about how we would answer the following question:
When my child makes a mistake or when something doesn’t go right, how does he/she react and handle the situation? This is one of the most effective ways of assessing self-confidence and the presence of a growth mindset, by examining how our child perceives and copes with the mistakes and setbacks that are a natural part of life.
To help children cope with mistakes, parents can serve as models by being open about mistakes they make. Share mistakes you have made and what you learned from them. All of this helps to normalize mistakes and helps children learn to value mistakes as learning opportunities.
With that in mind, examine the language we use with children. Think of the messages we send to kids when we say the following:
Look, you didn’t make any mistakes! or Wow, you did that so quickly!
When a child hears these messages he/she may begin to say to him/herself, “You think I’m smart when I’m fast and perfect, I better not try anything too hard because I might fail.”
In contrast, if we allow our child to struggle with a task and if we are patient and coach our child through setbacks, our child quickly learns that we value challenge and improvement over an easy win. Research shows that not only will this approach help our child learn more but it also helps children become happier and more confident individuals.
