5 Quick Things: Meet the Amazing Staff at MRHS!
Mr. Smeltzer: World Language Department
1. Love to visit historic places with my kids (Walden Pond, MFA, DC, etc.)
2. My youngest son (Matt) always lies down when we visit a place.
3. I have 2 dogs that bark a lot (a Golden Doodle and a Bichon Frise)
4. I like it when Adam Rose or John Anderson ask me to help out with golf team.
5. Rich Houston is a great colleague to talk to about any subject.
Ms. Barnes: English Department
5. I am a published author. I wrote an essay about a teacher I loved when I was in High School, and it was selected for inclusion in the book Faces of Learning. It was a fun surprise to hear from the school secretary that my publisher had called. I told her I didn’t think I had one, and she said, “That’s what I said!” It was a wonderful way to find out my work was appreciated.
4. I have two rescue dogs, both from a special needs adoption site in Alabama. Sister had three legs, a broken ear, heartworm, hookworm, and a bullet in her shoulder when she came to us, and is the most loyal and loving dog I could ever ask for. Once her heartworm was treated we adopted Indi to keep her company. The only thing he is missing is any shred of dignity, which keeps us laughing at home. They may not be perfect, but they are perfect for my family.
3. I love music and play just about any instrument I can get my hands on. Some of the ones for which I have actually received training include piano, pipe organ, handbells, flute, viola, piccolo, saxophone, and harpsichord. I am currently trying to figure out how to play an acoustic bass and may succumb to finding lessons soon.
2. The great cause in my life right now is Muscular Dystrophy, as a close member of my family has been diagnosed with it. Telethon weekend in September, March Shamrock sales, and fire department Fill the Boot events are the ways most people recognize to support MDA, and we do our share to support these as a family. I am proud to say that I have captained a team for the last three years for the Walk-a-Thon, raising over $6,000 last year alone. Money equals research, and only research can find a cure, so this is an investment in hope for the health of my family.
1. I am a proud member of a family of readers. Clearing the table at our house is often complicated by the number of books in the way of the plates and silverware, and finding space on the coffee table for actual coffee is almost an impossibility! It is my favorite kind of clutter, and I love that I can share my passion for knowledge, humor, and entertainment with the ones that I love through the many books we read and share with each other.
Anne Leete: English Department
1. My children (and now grandchild) are the most important things in the world to me - the fates gave them to me alone when my husband died and my only wish is that they have happy, healthy and safe lives, free from the heartache they have already suffered. (That is my oldest - Kevin Ryan Crowley Leete - holding what hopefully will be his oldest - Ryan Crowley Leete)
2. My friends come next on the list as what I hold dear - they have stood by me and sustained me through many happy times and much hardship. I can say without guile that they are all nicer than me - allowing me to get away with being the curmudgeon I was meant to be. Thanks Dad - and I mean that very lovingly.
3. I have been coming to the Cape since I was born and only a few years ago my sisters and I sold the family cottage in Chatham where we spent 50 plus, glorious summers. Of Course my middle sister still owns 2 houses in Chatham (with 2 boats and 2 moorings - but we won't talk about her...) I've lived happily for the last 36 years in Harwich.
4. I travelled extensively when I was young and quite frankly would be happy living in the South of France ( ok - I suppose anyone would!) but I am also completely content where I am. I always feared being alone when I was young but now I realize I am quite good at it - well as long as I have a dog.
5. I have always known I was going to be a teacher and it has always come naturally to me, but if I absolutely had my way in the world I would spend my time volunteering - no money involved, no expectations by anyone but yourself, no responsibility but to yourself and the committment you make. To me that is the ideal - but...I have to eat (and so does the dog) so here I am. Good thing I love my students too.

Athletic Department Update:
We are in the process of establishing a Unified Soccer Team for the Fall. Mrs. Dooley & Mrs. Fratus classes along with some of our student-athletes are preparing to play in the South Shore League 1st annual Soccer jamboree to be held at Norwell High School on Saturday, November 1st. As we closer to the event I will have more details.
Our Captain’s Council held its second meeting this past Thursday morning to continue the process of defining the role of Captain on our Athletic Teams. The discussion was lively and there is great interaction between the captains from our 8 varsity fall sports. The eventual goal of the Council is help train our underclassmen as to the expectations of leadership within our athletic programs.
