SHISD Mid-Week Message
Weekly Superintendent's Message for Spring Hill ISD
End of the 1st Six Weeks!
Panther Family,
I hope you have had an excellent 1st six weeks. I also hope the four day "Fall Break" came at a good time for everyone to rest up and get energized for the rest of the fall semester. Soon, I will be sending out a survey to get your opinion on a number of items including the calendar and the staff development weeks in August. Your input will be valuable as we plan for next year.
This week we had a great board meeting. Here are some of the highlights:
- Mrs. Fleet gave a great presentation on the 2017 PBMAS report for SHISD.
- District and Campus Plans were approved and are on the district and campus websites.
- The purchase of Renaissance Learning (Accelerated Reader) was approved for another year for the Primary and Intermediate. (This was paid for with campus budgeted money)
- The purchase of Mentoring Minds software was approved for the intermediate. (This was paid for with campus budgeted money)
- The board approved a contract to clean and disinfect locker rooms as a preventative for staph infections. (This was paid for with budgeted maintenance money)
- The board approved an agreement to continue the Boy's and Girls' Club through 2020.
The biggest news of the week is the SH Team Tennis won a District Championship last night after defeating Bullard! Congratulations to Coach Latham and Coach Ford!
- Our deepest condolences to Charlotte Kincy in the loss of her husband, Jeff. Jeff was a beloved former East Texas coach. Coach Kincy, a graduate of Pine Tree High School and Stephen F. Austin State University, was a longtime baseball and football coach with stints at Longview, Pittsburg and Spring Hill. He also taught Integrated Physics and Chemistry while at Spring Hill.
- We send our heartfelt sympathies to Melissa Haney and family on the recent loss of Melissa's father

Health Science STEM Field Trip
I was able to take my Health Science STEM students on a field trip to Longview Regional Hospital on October 3, 2017. This was part of their job shadowing program. I had no idea that my eyes would fill with tears. Now to qualify that statement.
This is my fifth year to be here at Spring Hill High School teaching our students about the healthcare industry. I find it a real challenge to enlighten these kids and try to put a piece of my soul and love for this occupation into their lives. Today seeing their eyes light up and the wheels in their brains moving at lightening speed brought me to tears.
I was so proud of them. Their medical vocabulary is beginning to show! One student was even able to make a great impression on a seasoned nurse with her knowledge of abbreviations and acronyms. This confirms that I am getting through to them!!!
One student said to me, “Ms. Borden, I really liked what the respiratory therapist does, I am interested in that job now.” WOW!!!!
The delight and excitement was amazing. I am so glad that a new door was opened for them.
I am looking forward to taking the next group of 15 students to Longview Regional on October 10th. I hope I am able to witness another spark in their lives. -Mindy Borden
ARTrageous Holds the First Meeting for the 2017-2018 School Year
Mrs. Pilar McLemore, from the Longview Museum of Fine Arts, gave a presentation about programs and services provided to the community of Longview.
ARTrageous plans to return to its original purpose to make the arts an integral part of young peoples lives through education, and exposure to performances. The arts will be promoted as a foundation for lifelong learning. Campuses will seek out opportunities that have no other funding and propose grants to the board.
If you are interested in serving on the ARTragous committee, please contact Meredith Smeltzer, msmeltzer@shisd.net.

Region 7 ESC Offers a Parent Academy
Region 7 ESC staff members are holding the 10th annual Parent Academy.
The academy is scheduled for Thursday, October 26 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The focus of the no-cost academy is to provide parents with tools to better support their child's education. Parents will also have an opportunity to ask questions.
The academy will offer the following sessions:
Building Parent/Teacher Relationships: Tracy Stewart & Cathy Gaskin (early childhood & elementary)
Parents, how well do you know your child's teachers? How does the relationship between your child's teachers affect their learning-or does it at all? In this session, parents will gain knowledge on the importance of having a relationship with teachers, how and what to communicate to teachers, the expectations of both parent and teacher and much more.
Technology Tools to Support Math and Reading: Andy Adams (all level)
Do you sometimes feel like your child's schoolwork has surpassed what you remember from school? This session will explore tech tools to help you and your child in math and reading (and writing).
Parent and Family Engagement: Vicki Weatherford (all level)
Parent and Family Engagement focuses on increasing the capacity of both staff and families in the 4Cs: Capabilities, Connections, Cognition and Confidence. This hands-on, interactive workshop is designed to inspire teachers and families to form powerful learning partnerships to enhance student performance and enable systemic school advancement.
It Starts With Me: Donna Holt (early childhood & elementary)
Without self-regulation, children throw fits, back-talk, name-call, behave erratically, and withdraw. Self-control seems to be impossible. Through exploration of Conscious Discipline® Five Step Regulation Process, participants will leave with techniques to aid in creating a safe environment that fosters an adult's and child's ability to develop self-regulation.
Study Strategies and Resources: Jackie Reavis (all level)
Join us as we share ideas to help students better understand instructional materials and become successful learners. This session will provide hands-on activities to assist students with organizing and retrieving information as well as practical information for parents and educators.
Life After High School: Adrian Knight (middle & high school)
Planning for life after high school for your child? We'll be looking at free online resources you can use to help your child explore occupations and opportunities available to them after completing high school.
Purpose for Endorsements and Graduation Requirements: Sherry Morton (middle & high school)
Graduation plans are not what they used to be. Join me as we unravel your child's graduation opportunities and choices in Texas.
Lunch will be provided to all attendants. To register please select here.
