OUR STORY - Shout Outs!
WCS Weekly Highlights - Jan. 27-31, 2020
Hygiene Kits
Shout Out! to Beauty4Ashes Soaring Eagles Foundation and the Rebirthing Our Cultural Kingdom Foundation for donating hygiene kits to three elementary schools - Hearne, Winstead and Barnes. Cecellia Hall, the founder of Beauty4Ashes, spearheaded the donation. She wanted to give back to WCS because her children attended our schools. As she receives more donations, she plans to expand this project to other elementary schools. We are grateful for this generous donation! Great coverage in The Wilson Times. Anyone who would like to donate hygiene products for additional kits can call Ms. Hill at 252-292-5657.
Bacon Award
At the monthly Administrators Meetings, Superintendent Dr. Mills gives out packs of bacon to principals for different accomplishments. At the Jan. 28 meeting, the Bringing Home the Bacon Awards went to Gardners ES Principal Cheryl Baggett, Toisnot MS Principal Wendy Sullivan and Springfield MS Principal Marquis Spell for being the first three principals to complete instructional rounds at other schools. Dr. Mills has challenged the principals to visit two other schools - one with their same grade levels and one with different grade levels - to see what other schools in our district are doing. This is a great collaborative initiative to share best practices, build relationships and increase student achievement. Huge thanks to Smithfield Foods for providing the bacon!
Book Fairs a Plus
Shout Out! to our schools that hold Book Fairs to encourage literacy, foster a love of reading in students and to raise money. The students have the best time picking out their books! Wells ES (pictured) is holding their Book Fair this week. Some of the most popular books are Minecraft, Dogman and any book about unicorns. Wells ES wanted to thank the volunteers who are helping children choose their books and count their money, which includes students from Beddingfield HS and the Wilson Academy of Applied Technology. Shout Out! as well to all of our media coordinators for their hard work, which includes Wells ES Media Coordinator Melissa Mills!
STEM Lab Fun
Shout Out! to the fourth-graders in Carol Price's STEM Lab at Vick ES for conquering their fears to learn about three somewhat icky animals - fiddler crabs, African dwarf frogs and millipedes. Once they got used to the animals, they had a great time studying their anatomical structures, diets and habitats. Shout Out! as well to Ms. Price for keeping the students engaged and letting them figure things out for themselves like scientists. Great coverage in The Wilson Times.
Golden Spoon
Shout Out! to Stantonsburg ES Principal Zachery Temple for having the winning dish at his school's Chili/Soup Cook Off for staff on Jan. 17. He received the Golden Spoon Award for his delicious chili with bacon. Staff at Stantonsburg ES implemented monthly potluck lunches a few years ago to foster relationships and this year, they decided to add a few competitions. They held a dip competition in October and will be having a bake off in February.
FFA Competition
Shout Out! to the Beddingfield HS Future Farmers of America (FFA) Livestock Judging Team for competing in the state's FFA competition on Nov. 26 in Raleigh. The Junior Team consisting of Macy, Thomas, Anna Grace and Mandy finished 16th in the state. The Senior Team members - Abby, Jessi, Haley and Grayson - finished 25th overall. Congrats to all of these students and Agriculture Teacher/FFA Advisor Bryant Glover.
More Shout Outs!
- Shout Out! to Vinson-Bynum ES for hosting a successful Family Coding Night! They had a great turnout, and the parents enjoyed interacting with their children as they used their problem solving skills to work through the coding challenges.
- Vinson-Bynum ES Principal Jenny Hayes would like to Shout Out! WCS Technology Coordinator Michelle Edwards. She has worked tirelessly to update the iPads at Vinson-Bynum ES so teachers can continue testing students on Istation. Ms. Hayes and all of the staff truly appreciate her efforts to keep them on track with testing!
- Shout Out to the Wilson Tobs for their continued partnership with WCS! The Tobs spearhead two great reading programs - Read Around the Bases in the elementary schools and Swing for the Fences in the middle schools. The purpose is to inspire and expand the reading frequency of students and encourage excitement in casual reading. Students are asked to read books in order to receive special rewards, which include Tobs tickets, school items and on-field recognition at games! Click here to view two videos that explain more about the programs and the Tobs' vision. Shout Out! to WCS Executive Director of Secondary Education David Lyndon for being featured in one of the videos!
School in the Spotlight - Springfield MS
Check out these pictures of students at Springfield MS working hard in their classes and enjoying time together! We joined Principal Marquis Spell as he made his daily visit into every classroom. The students couldn't wait to pose for pictures with him - after all he is the WCS Selfie King! We were blown away by the musical talent of the students in the band and chorus classrooms and also loved how the hallways were filled with beautiful student artwork and motivational quotes. The students were excited to show us the circuit kits they were working with that enabled them to use their STEM skills to create motors and electricity. Our students smiling faces are what it's all about!
