Early Life

Antonio Vivaldi was born in Venice, Italy on March 4, 1678. He grew up with four brothers and four sisters. Vivaldi had a medical condition called asthma. However, this did not stop him from composing music. At age 15, he began studying to become a priest and in 1703, he became one. Vivaldi was known as "the red priest" because of his bright red hair, however he only said mass a few times.

I chose this map of Italy to resemble Vivaldi's life. Antonio was born in Venice and lived there as he got older. This map was made in 1689, eleven years after he was born. Vivaldi also worked at the Ospedale della Pieta, that was located in Italy. He worked for there 40 years as a music teacher and wrote hundreds of compositions, all in Italy.
Four Seasons ~ Vivaldi

The Four Seasons

This is a video of Vivaldi's most famous work. This composition is called The Four Seasons. This piece is made into four parts, Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. In this video, the music is performed with violins. Each part (or season) has different tempos, rhythms, melodies, harmonies, metres, dynamics, and pitches that make them similar to the seasons of the year. Along with each season, Viavaldi wrote a sonnet to describe them.

Other Known Pieces of Music

Vivaldi had many compositions, some more famous then others. One of the most popular pieces is The Four Seasons, made up of Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter. Other pieces of violin concertos include L'estro Armonico, La Starvaganza, Le Quattro Stagione, and La Cetra. Antonio also wrote opera scores, including La constanza trionfante and Farnace. Furthermore, Vivaldi wrote cantatas; one of his own, Gloria e Imeneo, was written specifically for the wedding of King Louis XV.

Vivaldi's Legacy

Antonio Vivaldi was one of the greatest musical figures of the Baroque period. He wrote hundreds of compositions that are well known today and enjoyed by many. His unique Baroque style made his pieces famous and renowned. Vivaldi is influential because he made a tremendous impact in music. Vivaldi worked at the Ospedale Della Pieta for 40 years while he challenged the girls' right to perform music in public. He taught orphaned girls how to play musical instruments, and shared his love of music. In conclusion, Antonio Vivaldi made a huge impact on the music world.
