Emmott Eagle News
We Are Eagles Watch Us Soar
May 20, 2018
Dear Parents & Guardians,
This is the time of year when I typically prepare an end-of-year message reflecting on the successes of the school year and the exciting future ahead. I had this message queued up for Friday, but could not bring myself to push send. In light of the horrific news out of Santa Fe ISD, the tone felt insensitive.
There will be a time for that message, surely, because we have had an overwhelmingly successful school year. But it has not been without its challenges. I include the two major public school shootings in Parkland, Fla., and Santa Fe, Texas, among those challenges, because when one school community suffers, we all share in their grief and seek ways to eliminate future threats to our students and staff.
In an effort to end the year on a positive note, I have asked our chief of police, Eric Mendez, to increase police presence on every campus. I was pleased to learn from Chief Mendez that the CFPD’s thorough recruiting efforts recently resulted in a fully-staffed police force. This will be a tremendous help in bolstering the protection of each of our 91 campuses and support facilities.
I have also communicated to each principal the need for a strict enforcement of dress code. Through the end of the school year, we are asking that no students wear trench coats or other heavy clothing that could potentially conceal weapons. While we want students to dress in clothing that is comfortable in their learning environment, we feel any extra safety measure that assists our officers and administrators should be utilized.
I ask that you assist us through this transition by communicating these efforts to your students. During these anxious times, vigilance is key.
Thank you for your continued support.
Sincerely,
Mark Henry, Ed.D.
Superintendent of schools

On May 22 starting at 4:00 a.m., the cement trucks will be here to pour cement into the "new driveway" area at the front of the school. I have talked with our Division One Lead Contractor and he has ensured that he will be there to assist with our arrival procedures on this day. Our staff will be working together to continue our smooth transition for morning arrival, but please be aware that the Cement Trucks & Crew will be actively started on their project well before the start of the day.
We ask that car riders remain in the normal line, stay off cell phones (for safety), and adhere to any staff member redirection while we adjust for this day. The interruption will only take place on this day.
Below you will see pictures of where the new driveway cement will be poured. It is all coming together so nicely!
Please feel free to spread the word in the community to help other drivers in the area.
Thank you and we appreciate your patience.

Summer Reading
Can you believe we are only down to 200 books not returned? That is an amazing number considering how many we had still out. It is not too late to keep looking for library books and help bring us to 100%.
Your child(ren) will come home within next two weeks with a Summer Reading Bag filled with books of their choice to enjoy over the summer and continue their LOVE of READING! Please share in the excitement with our EAGLES and Read, Read, Read!

Credit By Exam Information through June 1st
Students in grades K-5 will have four opportunities during the school year to use “credit-by-exam” to accelerate to another grade level. Students will only have one opportunity to test for each grade level considered.
To apply to take the test to skip kindergarten, a student must be 5 by September 1, and registered in a CFISD school. To apply to take the test to skip grade 1, a student must be 6 by September 1, and enrolled in a CFISD school.
Students who earn scores of 80% or better on each component of the credit-by-exam will qualify to advance one grade. Only one grade level may be “skipped” each year. No retests will be given.
If you are interested in getting more information about credit-by-exam, please contact the school counselor, Ms. Tamara Stewart.
