CSE Mini Spartan Weekly
Your Once-a-Week Update from Cold Spring Elementary
Dec. 1, 2017
“Happiness is not something you postpone for the future; it is something you design for the present.” – Jim Rohn
From the Principal's Desk
Greetings from CSE,
CSE Families.. thank you for your patience. As some of you may have noticed, there was a delay in receiving the Mini-Spartan Weekly since Fall Break. I was out on leave for three weeks this fall. This fall I had a unique and meaningful week in that I unexpectedly lost my father (Oct. 21) and expectently gained a daughter (Oct. 27). The combination of both the highs and lows have made me extremely reflective and thankful for so many things in my life.
One of the promises that I have made to myself (and my dad) is to spread more of the kindness and compassion that Dan (dad) brought to those around him. Dan was a teacher for 34 years in Crookston, Mn and spent much of that time making sure that students had an experience and a love of learning. Stop me sometime and I would love to tell you more about him and the work that he did.
My hope is that we continue to keep focused on an experience for kids at CSE that Dan would approve. Dad and I often talked about education and the need to focus on engagement, and having fun in learning. Dan's lasting legacy was that of child centered learning. My promise is to continue that experience at CSE.
In addition, we brought a beautiful daughter (Jessa Kennedy) to join our family. She is perfect and a bright spot in difficult times. She is a happy baby and loves to snuggle with mom and dad. She has blessed us in so many ways. Please enjoy some pictures of Jessa and Dad! These are a few of my favorites.
Please help me pay forward the kindness and love by hugging your kids and your Dads. Happy Belated Thanksgiving! Thank you for all of your kindness! You are much appreciated! As the quote so eloquently describes above.. don't wait for happiness.. it is already here.
Sincerely,
Dr. Eric Skanson

Wonder Movie Experience grades 2-5
Thanks to a wonderful and generous donation, all students 2-5 have been sponsored to see the movie Wonder at Quarry Cinema on Wednesday Dec 6th, during the school day. Multiple sponsors have paid for buses and tickets to the show.
This movie is based on the New York Times bestseller. WONDER tells the incredibly inspiring and heartwarming story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to discover their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.
This movie is rated PG. If you would like to opt out of this movie for your 2-5th grade student. Please notify the school by filling out the following form or emailing to skansone@rocori.k12.mn.us. FYI, grade three already experienced this movie, so they will use the donation for another experience this year. The concessions will be closed, please do not send money for concessions.
This is an incredible donation by a single donor. We ask that you fulfill the with of Auggie and pay forward the kindness during this holiday season. We have a Toys for Tots box in our office that we would love to see filled with "Kindness" this holiday season.
