The Big R
Canyon Rim scholars are learning about the Big R: Respectful, Responsible, Ready to Learn behavior. The Big R is symbolized by a sign language R. Mrs. Krohn kicked off the Big R at an assembly on August 24. Teachers and students have been defining the Big R and brainstorming examples of Big R behavior. Students who show respect, responsibility, and readiness to learn are awarded Big R raffle tickets. A drawing takes place at the end of each month. It's sure to be a productive school year with our Big R scholars!
Facts on Measure S
The OUSD Board of Education voted to place a bond on the November 2016 ballot which will directly impact our elementary students who will be future Canyon High School Comanches. OUSD's 4 high schools were built between 45-64 years ago and are not equipped for 21st Century teaching and learning. Measure S will cost approximately $29 per $100,00 of assessed property value (not market value) annually. Measure S will qualify the district for state matching funds of up to $60 million.
Measure S will provide locally controlled funds to modernize the 4 high schools of Orange Unified School District, specifically:
- Update classrooms and labs to accommodate the career and technology education classes that prepare students for college and well-paying jobs in fields such as health science, engineering, technology and skilled trades.
- Repair or replace leaky roofs, old rusty plumbing, and faulty electrical systems.
- Update instructional technology in the classroom for improved student learning in core subjects such as math and science.
- Retrofit older buildings to protect against the effects of earthquakes and reduce the risk of damage or injury during natural disasters.
- Update classrooms, science labs, career-training facilities, and libraries.
- Modernize aging science labs and equipment.
Measure S will require a clear system of accountability along with a Citizens' Oversight Committee to ensure funds are spent only on voter-approved projects. Get educated about Measure S!
Free and Appropriate Public Education
As a reminder, Canyon Rim Elementary, a public school, provides a free and appropriate education to our students. Public schools may solicit and accept donations from parents or the community, as long as it is voluntary and contributing is not a requirement for participating in an educational activity. Field trip fees are considered donations. No children are excluded due to financial hardship. If we experienced a large decrease in these donations, future field trips and activities would be eliminated.
