Say hello to your senior year! How cool it is that you get to begin your senior year with an event that has not taken place in almost 100 years! For some of you, it may feel like it has taken just as long to get to your senior year.

College and Career Counseling

I am super excited about helping you with your College/Career needs during this exciting time. I will be sending out a digital newsletter each month. It will be send to your email and posted to the Counseling website. It will contain important information. Some of the information you need to know, other parts you may not. It is your job to read through it and decide what you can use.

What are college preview days? These are days when colleges want you to visit their campuses. These are great opportunities to get a feel what everyday campus life is like!

  • The Student Ambassadors Foundation is a chance for students to develop their skills in citizenship & leadership. ASF Foundation Ambassadors will be selected to promote initiatives such as Don't Text & Drive, Smoke Free Alabama, etc. All 9th-12th grade students are eligible to apply. ASF Ambassadors will have opportunities to win academic scholarships to any 2 or 4 year college. Apply online at Deadline is September 6, 2017.

  • The University of Alabama College of Engineering will host an open house (E-day) on Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 8am- 1pm for seniors interested in a career in engineering or computer science. Info will be provided about admissions, housing, financial aid, scholarships, honors programs and more. Lunch will be provided. Register at Deadline to register is September 29, 2017.

  • This year, 100 scholarships ranging from $1,000 all the way up to $10,000 will be given away though the Wendy's Heisman Scholarship program. Scholarships are awarded to top performing scholar-athletes. Apply today at Deadline is October 2, 2017.

  • The Horatio Alger Association awards scholarships to students who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Awards range from $6,000 to $25,000. Students can apply at Deadline is October 25, 2017.

  • The Smith Scholarship Foundation provides assistance to high school seniors who have "given back" to their community through volunteer activities or care of family while overcoming financial and personal challenges. SSF provide up to $15,000 a year in financial assistance plus opportunities for study abroad, professional training through its Internship Program. Visit their website for an application and additional information at Deadline is January 5, 2018.


What is the FAFSA?

You must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you want to apply for federal and state financial aid. Many colleges and universities, especially public institutions, also require the FAFSA. You must submit the FAFSA every year that you want aid.

The FAFSA is available in several formats, including online, PDF and paper versions. The best option is to complete the web-based version of the FAFSA at, known as FAFSA on the Web.

What are the changes to the FAFSA?

You can start completing the FAFSA in OCTOBER using your parents 2016 taxes. This is a significant change for the better. You will have more time to complete the FAFSA.
