May Staff Recognition
For more than 30 years, the community-based Staff Recognition Committee has organized the Staff Recognition celebration to honor the West Des Moines Community Schools retirees and staff with 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, and 40 years or more of service.
In addition, we honor our retirees at a luncheon on the same day. Individual schools also coordinate individual retiree receptions. Those dates are available on the district website.

April Monthly Motivator
The challenge this month is to call four friends or family members. Talking on the phone has become much less common as technology has evolved and provided other avenues to communicate. But, there are great benefits to actually speaking with someone.
50/50 Fitness Challenge
Earlier this month you should have received the 50/50 Fitness Challenge but as a reminder, this quarterly challenge also starts April 1. This challenge is a great way to get employees moving this spring. Attached is the handout to share.
Acclaimed Author to Visit WDMCS April 24
In partnership with the West Des Moines Public Library and Rotary of West Des Moines, West Des Moines Community Schools (WDMCS) is excited to have New York Times-bestselling author Laurie Halse Anderson visit the district as part of the WDMCS Reads initiative.
Anderson will be at WDMCS on April 24, speaking with students in grades 5-12 throughout the day and with the public later that evening. She is known for tackling tough subjects with humor and sensitivity.
In conjunction to Anderson’s visit, WDMCS Community Education is hosting a “Speaking of Consent” workshop on April 30 through ParentQuest—a district program that provides a variety of opportunities for parents and other caring adults as they navigate each child’s path to success in school and life.
