WORD OF THE WEEK - "COURTEOUS"
A courteous person is polite and respectful.
“Life is not so short but that there is always time enough for
courtesy.” -- Ralph Waldo Emerson
PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Our TWO R. F. Bumpus Middle School wells have been built in India! Last year, as part of an interdisciplinary unit in 7th grade, students read “A Long Walk to Water” and then collected money school-wide and from the community to have a well built through Neverthirst
(an organization that provides people around the world with clean water) in India. We raised enough for not one, but two wells. Mrs. Wilson received word and photos last week letting
us know the wells had been built and are operational. Our 7th grade team of teachers is to be commended.

- Every school day in February, our students will read quotes made by prominent figures in Black History, during morning announcements.
- Our students will have the opportunity to learn more about black trailblazers in Alabama while participating in some friendly competition with Bumpus' Black History Month contest.

COMMON SENSE EDUCATION
To our parents and caregivers...a note about Common Sense Education’s Digital Citizenship Curriculum
Your child is taking part in classroom lessons from Common Sense Education. Common Sense helps kids learn the habits and skills they need to use technology safely and responsibly in school, at home, and beyond.
WHAT IS DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP? Kids today may seem like experts at using technology, but the digital world requires all kinds of skills and habits that kids don’t just pick up as they go. Digital citizenship helps them learn those skills. The Common Sense lessons help students in grades 6–8 reflect on their tech use and make thoughtful choices about how and when they use it. Kids also learn about how to stand up to cyberbullying, use social media carefully, and look critically at the news.
WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO Common Sense Education provides resources to help you support your kid’s learning. As we teach these lessons in our Social Studies class, you can visit the Common Sense website at www.commonsensemedia.org for tip sheets and activities you can do with your kids.
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. Working together with Common Sense Education, we can prepare today’s kids to think critically and use tech in positive, creative, and powerful ways.
Parents who need a place to start the conversation and to set boundaries, can begin with this Common Sense Family Media Agreement....CHECK IT OUT!

School News
INCENTIVE ROOM Bumpus would like to establish an incentive room as part of our Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) program. The room will be used to recognize and encourage students who strive towards respecting the Bumpus Way by adhering to school rules and expectations. Our goal is for students to embrace a culture of respect that they will carry with them outside of school and into the community. If you are interested in contributing to our incentive room by donating items, please contact Christy Hall at chall@hoover.k12.al.us. Examples of items needed: video consoles, video games, arcade games, board games, snack foods, candy, gaming chairs/seating, large screen tv's/monitors, large rugs/carpet, gaming tables.
A reminder about WEARABLES (smart watches, Apple watches, Fitbits, Garmin watches, etc.): Students should only use their wearable during the school day for time. A student using any other "phone" capabilities (texting, gaming, emailing, FaceTime, audio calls), will be accountable to our Student Code of Conduct. I have no desire to police the arm of adolescent. It's the use of the wearable that's at issue. Exceptions: Bumpus has a few students whose wearable transmits important information to Nurse Schmith. This is written into the student's medical care plan. i
From our Student Code of Conduct
2.18 THE UNAUTHORIZED USE OF ELECTRONIC DEVICES (such as cell phones, cell phone accessories including earbuds and headphones, computers, or wearable). Students are not permitted to use wireless/electronic devices at school without express permission from the school principal or designee
Thanks for reviewing this with your child.

SCOLIOLIS SCREENING Information
The Alabama State Department of Education and the Alabama Department of Public Health require that school districts in Alabama offer and provide scoliosis screening for male and female students in grades 5 through 9.
Screening is performed by observing the uncovered spine, viewing the student from the back, side and from and also with the student bending forward. If a spinal problem in suspected, the child will be rechecked at a second screening. Parents of any student found to have signs of possible spinal abnormality will be asked to see their own physicians for further evaluation.
On February 19th girls and boys will be screened separately to ensure privacy. They can wear gym clothes, bathing suits or other clothing that may be removed easily. Screening for your child will take place within the next two weeks. If your child is currently under treatment for a spinal deformity, please let us know and your child will be exempt from the screening process.
Please complete the consent form below indicating your wishes for screening. Hard copies are also available in the health room.
