CogAT Screener for 2nd Grade Begins this Month
All second graders will take a shortened screener version of the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) to provide universal information for future ELP services and to give instructional staff more information about students’ abilities. The test measures verbal, quantitative and nonverbal thinking skills. No preparation or studying is necessary. This is an electronic test that students will take on computers in their classrooms and their teacher and building ELP teacher will be present to oversee the process. Students will complete a brief practice session to make sure they are comfortable using the computer. The testing session will last a little over an hour and will include rest breaks between sections.
After the test, a report with the student's scores will be sent to the parent. Some students may later take the full Cognitive Abilities Test to gather more information about their abilities. That information, along with classroom performance and teacher information will be used to determine eligibility for ELP services in higher grades. You will be kept informed throughout this process. Feel free to contact your child’s teacher or the building's ELP teacher if you have questions. More information about ELP services is available on the school district’s website: http://www.iowacityschools.org/site/Default.aspx?PageID=293
CogAT for 3rd. 4th, and 5th Grade Students
The yearly screening of students for participation in the Extended Learning Program (ELP), the elementary program for gifted and very high ability students, is underway for the 2020-2021 school year. This program is appropriate for students who are at the highest academic levels in their grade. Students can enter this screening pool by Iowa Statewide Assessment of Student Progress (ISASP) scores, teacher nomination or parent nomination. More information is available on the district website www.iowacityschools.org/ELP.
Only grades three through five are included in this screening process. Kindergarten and first grade students are being screened for ELP services through in-class lessons and collaboration with the classroom teacher throughout the school year. All second grade students will be screened in the Spring. Parents will receive notification about second grade screening when it is scheduled at their child’s school. No parent or teacher nominations are necessary for grades K-2.
If you would like to nominate your third, fourth or fifth grade child to be tested for ELP services, please complete a parent information form. Forms will be available online between February 21 and March 27, 2020, at https://forms.gle/AYjHSh61bErcyRWi8. Paper forms will be available in the school office during the same time. No forms will be accepted after March 27, 2020, at 4:00 PM.
