SCHOLARSHIP ALERT
The Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award
The Association of Women Psychiatrists is pleased to announce the 2017 Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award, which recognizes a female medical student who best exemplifies the spirit of creativity, energy, and leadership that Dr. Dickstein herself epitomizes and seeks to foster in others.
Application Deadline March 15, 2017
The winner will be notified by April 15 and will receive her award at the Annual Meeting of the Association of Women in Psychiatry’s Annual Meeting which is held in conjunction with the APA Annual Meeting.
Award
The Association of Women Psychiatrists is pleased to sponsor the Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award. The recipient of the AWP Leah J. Dickstein, M.D. Award will be expected to attend the Annual Meeting (in conjunction with the American Psychiatric Association meeting) in San Diego in May where she will receive this award. The winner will receive a plaque honoring her achievements and also be invited to join the award committee for the following year and encouraged to participate in other AWP activities. The awardee will receive $1000 to help defray the expenses of attending the meeting (with any remainder to be used at the awardee’s discretion). We look forward to receiving your nomination and completed application.
Eligibility
The award is open to female medical students who have demonstrated superior academic achievement, creativity, and leadership. Examples of appropriate disciplines or genres include: service or clinical aspects of medicine; science research; or excellence in art, music, literature, etc.
SUMMER FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES
Dr. June Jackson Christmas Medical Student Summer Fellowship

Supported by an American Psychiatric Association (APA)--Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Resident Minority Fellowship
The Dr. June Jackson Christmas Medical Student Fellowship offers a chance for medical students who belong to historically underrepresented racial and ethnic groups to explore a career in psychiatry. The program is hosted by the Psychiatry Department at Columbia University and is a five-week experience for medical students in the summer after completing their first year of medical school. Students will be exposed to the breadth of psychiatry with rotations through an inpatient psychiatry unit, a community outpatient clinic, a mobile crisis team, a Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), and through a consultation-liaison service. In addition, students will be paired with mentors who will help them gain a more personalized experience and will continue to be available to them after completion of the program. The fellowship opportunity provides a $3,000 stipend for the 5 weeks of clinic experience.
Jeanne Spurlock Minority Medical Student Research Fellowships in Substance Abuse and Addiction

Supported by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (award availability contingent upon funding from sponsor)The Jeanne Spurlock Minority Medical Student Research Fellowship provides up to $4,000 for 8-12 weeks of research training in substance abuse and addiction under a mentor with extensive experience in the type of research that is being proposed, and whose work includes children and adolescents participants. This program also provides additional travel for required attendance to AACAP’s 63rd Annual Meeting in New York, NY, October 24 - 29, 2017.
Applications are considered from African-American, Native American, Alaskan Native, Mexican American, Hispanic, Asian, and Pacific Islander students in accredited U.S. medical schools or students whose research will focus on minorities.

APA Travel Scholarships for Medical Students
TRAVEL AWARD Application Deadline: June 21, 2017
These scholarships support travel and related costs for racial/ethnic and underrepresented minority medical students considering a career in psychiatry to attend the IPS: The Mental Health Services Conference in October.
This program is a terrific way for medical students to witness organized psychiatry at work and learn more about the field. Not only will students attend sessions for experts and trainees alike, they will be assigned a mentor who help maximize their IPS: The Mental Health Services Conference experience and discuss career plans and resident training programs.
