Should We Have a Free Period or Recess During School?
A big question for kids in middle school is do they need a free period or recess during their busy school day? A person who supports this may argue that you can become unchallenged at a point in time during class and you may need a break. Taking a break can help your mind focus and that will help students complete more work. What if you have Study Hall but you have no work to do, or you worked so hard that you completed your assignments-a free period or recess would be beneficial. These are some reasons why a lot of people think that we should have recess in middle school.
There are some downsides, however, such as only some students will get to go to recess. This would include students with good grades, or those that have finished their work. They will be the only ones who get to have recess or free time. This also doesn’t benefit teachers, because in elementary school during recess teachers could plan and take a break. Now we have wheel which is what that time is for. It is also hard to monitor the kids outside and make sure that only kids who have earned are playing outside. We have more kids in the school now and monitoring them is more work.
There is some hope. Kids with good grades are most likely more responsible with how they spend their time, so if they have work to do, they do it. Also, people can make friends while they are outside and relaxing. This could also encourage kids to do better in their classes so they could participate. Since a lot of people maybe long for free time in their day, getting the chance to have a break may be very tempting. Kids may be determined to work extra hard to boost up their grades and possibly get rewarded. Overall, there are great arguments for both sides, but in the end it depends on how well the students work and how responsible they are. In our opinion, we think that it is better for people to take a break. This can encourage people to get better grades and could even have a positive effect on the school.

LAKERS READ! Recommended By: Lindsay O.
Connor, son of the general of the Great Saltee Air Force, was born on a hot air balloon, so his desire to fly was natural. One day, while he was playing with sassy Princess Isabella in a castle by the sea, he walked into the king's lab and created a chemical reaction that caused a fire. He tried to escape by flying a parachute over the ocean but almost drowned. Firemen had put out the fire but that part of the castle was never repaired.
It was nighttime and Connor was wandering the castle. He heard suspicious noises and decided to investigate. Soon, he witnessed Sir Trudeau, captain of the knights, murder the king. The following day Sir Trudeau accused Connor of the murder. No one had evidence to contradict him, so Connor's father let Sir Trudeau take Connor to a prison where convicts were forced to mine for diamonds underwater.
While in his cell, Connor begins to devise a plan to escape from prison and defeat Sir Trudeau. First he would fight the leader of a prison gang, trick the gang leader into giving him diamonds, build a hot air balloon, and break into Sir Trudeau's tower wearing a black suit that could fly like a hang glider. The question is: will he succeed?
While reading this book, you will keep asking this question: who will win, a quick, clever boy or a deceiving, power-hungry man trusted by many? Reading has never felt so thrilling.

Random Acts of Kindness-Student Spotlight
By: Alessandra F., Shea H., Jessica U., Adrianna C., Lydia T.
This week our Kindness Spotlight is James F., a 7th grader, who is a positive role model here at LMS. He was nominated by a one of his teachers. When asked what kindness means to him James said, "Kindness means to be friendly, really nice, and it helps others a lot." If James could use one word to describe what kindness it would be, friendly. If James saw a situation where a person was being bullied he wouldn't just be one to sit and watch it happen he would get up and tell the person to stop and would tell the person being bullied that they don't deserve to be treated that way. If you are ever feeling down James is the kind of friend who would be there for you. Being kind is very important to James and it should be to you as well.
