CARLSON COURIER
Home of Champions
Hello Champion Families,
I hope your weekend is going well. I am happy to report we are officially done with AzM2 testing. Thank you for all your help getting your child(ren) prepared and here on time each day. We had one of our best weeks attendance wise and tested all but a handful of eligible students. Full disclaimer, the amount of virtual work we did this year made testing with paper and pencil seem both ironic and less conventional than what we've grown accustomed to. However, I must pass along the positive feedback from staff about the attention to detail, effort given, and how respectful students were during testing. The same can be said for our K-2 students that were extra quiet when traveling in the hallways, at recess, and using the restrooms. Everyone was extra patient and flexible as we focused on and completed testing. The best part, it's over and we can get back to learning and use these final seven weeks to make as much progress as we can.
Although AzM2 is finished, our 5th graders have one more exam for science this week. Students will complete the AZSCI assessment on computers, go figure! The entire test consists of two parts and shouldn't take more than a couple hours.
With testing taking up much of the week, there isn't much else to report other then, we finished the week by honoring all of our Champions selected as the CARING students of the month. Congrats to all of or recipients and thank you for being such kind and caring individuals.
Coming up this week, as mentioned above, 5th grade students will be taking the AZSCI assessment on Tuesday 4/13. On Thursday, (correction: right date, wrong day last week; my apologies) PTO will be holding its General Meeting for next year's board nominations at 3:30pm in the media center. Please plan on attending if you are interested in serving on PTO or volunteering next year. Also, we could use a few more parents that are interested in serving on site council. Site council is a committee made up of parents, community members, and staff that help make policy recommendations, oversee tax credit expenditures, and help guide decision making at Carlson. If interested please contact the front office at 480-224-3800.
Finally, does your child have a special talent? Would they be interested in competing in this year's virtual talent show? If so, please have them go and see Mrs. Trafficante or Mrs. Malizia (5th grade, room #29) for more information and your teacher for a permission slip. They are due back on April 21st. Auditions will be held during the school day on April 28th. That should do it for this edition. Thank you again for all your support and patience this year; it's beyond appreciated and means more to us than you can imagine.
Most Gratefully,
Mr. Morgan

A LOOK AROUND CAMPUS
A Message From
Health Services - Allergies
CUSD families,
The weather is starting to warm up and the desert is in bloom. While we welcome the Spring air, many children and adults within our community will soon experience symptoms of seasonal allergies. This year we must be mindful of the overlapping symptoms between COVID-19 and seasonal allergies. Our COVID-19 illness policy will remain as is and any student with symptoms of illness (congestion or runny nose, headache, sore throat, nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, cough, fever above 100.4, shortness of breath not attributed to an underlying cause, chills, muscle or body aches, new loss of taste or smell) should not come to school. Please refer to the attached CUSD Exclusion guidelines.
To limit absences related to seasonal allergy symptoms, we urge you to speak with your child’s health care provider for recommendations on how to prevent or manage these symptoms. We are hopeful this proactive approach will help keep students on campus. We appreciate the opportunity to care for your students. Thank you for understanding our need to continue to maintain strict mitigation measures at this time.
Sincerely,
Health Services

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO)
PTO is busy planning for Teacher Appreciation Week which will be held the week of May 3rd. We know this fun filled week will be here before we know it so our planning is underway! Our Carlson teachers have worked very hard and this year PTO would like to shower our hard working teachers with the "gift of giving." Each day during Teacher Appreciation week we will be holding a drawing where teachers can win a gift card. To help make this gift card drawing a success where all teachers are gifted at least one gift card we are asking for the support of our Carlson Families. PTO is looking for donations of gift cards of all kinds! If you would like to donate a gift card (any value and any venue) please send in the gift card in a sealed envelope labeled "PTO". Teachers will turn in the sealed envelopes to PTO. We are asking for all donations to be sent in by Thursday, April 22nd. Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a successful Teacher Appreciation week! If you have any questions please contact the PTO President at katie@carlsonpto.com
