New Drinking Fountains with Water Bottle Fillers
Students are loving the new drinking fountains! The water is filtered, has a great flow, kids can fill up their water bottles, and as one fifth grader said to Ms. Gamboa after taking a drink at recess, "It's so fresh and cold!"
Roosevelt "Junior Recs" ROCK!
This year Roosevelt Elementary welcomed a new student program called “Junior Recs” with the goal of elevating student voice and improving student agency, sense of belonging, school pride and problem solving. Under the leadership of Assistant Principal, Danielle Chung, students in 4th and 5th grade who are interested begin by participating in leadership training to help lead their younger peers during the mid-day recess. After training and shadowing a playground teacher, they are assigned to help out on specific days of the week. When it’s their turn to serve, Junior Recs first eat their lunch, then they report to the office to get a special vest, much like what the adults playground teachers wear. Equipped with a few “Bear Bucks” they head out to the playground to help out at 2nd or 3rd grade mid-day recess by providing positive reinforcement to students who are following the Roosevelt Guidelines for Success. They also help students problem solve and promote good sportsmanship using the Roosevelt Choice Chart. Not only has the program been beneficial to our school culture and climate, but it’s also super popular with students who are signed up to help throughout the rest of the school year! We are so proud of our Roosevelt Junior Recs.
We have new habitat for pollinators at Roosevelt, thanks to Ground Education!
