Counseling Corner
Did you know intelligence is not set in stone? One of the important factors for being able to develop intelligence is the belief that it is the result of hard work and practice. This is called growth mindset. Here are some tips to help your child develop their own growth mindset when it comes to schoolwork. These tips can also be applied to everyday life.
Teach your child that it is okay to be wrong and to learn from mistakes. Trying something new is difficult and it takes time to learn what works and what does not. Mistakes actually help the brain grow and encourage learning. When someone makes a mistake, they are forced to find out why and then learn something new in the process.
Teach your child to keep trying, even if they can't see the end solution to their problem. Some problems require several steps to find the right solution. Encourage your child to try different approaches at first rather than asking for help right away. If they have tried a few different tactics, but are still having trouble, then step in to assist, but do not solve the problem for them.
No one has a growth mindset 100% of the time. Having a growth mindset can be challenging and your child will have moments when they are not confident in themselves. Taking a break can be helpful. Always do your best to encourage them and remind them to keep trying.
