KMS Up2Date
May 7, 2021
Principal's Message
Now that the weather is warming up many students and faculty members have begun to use our outdoors learning spaces. Students should continue to dress appropriately as it can be cooler than forecasted. All PE classes will be held outdoors, weather permitting.
Speaking of dressing appropriately, I am asking that students and their families review the KMS Student Handbook regarding the expectation of attire. The dress code can be found on page 12 of the handbook. Please let us know if you have any questions.
We will administer Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Assessments next week on May 11 and May 12. THIS IS FOR GRADE 8 ONLY. I have included the expectations and schedule below. Families of virtual students should refer to the email sent by Mrs. Michelle Clifford regarding specifics concerning transportation and participation.
We're announcing the date for the 8th grade Moving Up Night below. More detailed information to follow.
Please scroll through this week’s update. Lots of information for everyone.
Wishing our moms in the community a very Happy Mother’s Day,

Reading Ambassadors
A group of high-powered readers are leading the way at KMS by welcoming incoming 5th grade students! Kara Pisasale, Austin McCarty, Ellie Donovan and Samantha Campbell are sharing their reading expertise with 5th grade students from Colt Andrews to help students make great selections for their summer reading. Mrs Sousa, who teaches 6th grade ELA, is proud of their initiative and enthusiasm for great books! Research shows that students who read-succeed!
Students looking for a great book to read this coming summer will find their recommendations on the KMS website in June. The librarian, Mrs Galipeau, and ELA Curriculum Coordinator, Mrs. Bernard will also post information on KMS website, in June.
Samantha, Austin, Ellie, and Kara have excellent book recommendations for students in grades 6-8!

Here’s our May E-Newsletter!
Please read about the recent USDA school meals announcement and ways to become a better advocate for healthier school meals for kids. We’ve recognized May Mental Health Awareness Month with more webinars from RISAS and are promoting several end-of-year activities/programs to keep students engaged all the way through June 25th (last day of school). Plus a quick turn-around Farm-to-School mini-grant opportunity which could provide $1,500 to help develop and implement a project from now until the end of 2021.
Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series
Rhode Island PBS Education Services is excited to announce the Sesame Street in Communities (SSIC) Workshop Series! Presented in both English & Spanish, in collaboration with RI Kids Count, Massachusetts Strategies for Children and RI & MA SEIU Education and Support Fund, SSIC’s goal is to support parents, caregivers and community providers with FREE tools and resources from Sesame Street that help increase successful outcomes for children, both in school and in life. Participants receive a complimentary Sesame Street care package, along with a certificate for PD hours, approved by the Center for Early Learning Professionals.
This workshop is intended for adult caregivers, parents and guardians, not for participation by children. Please register for either our English or Spanish sessions. Project made possible with generous support from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB.)
Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring
Our names are Julia Hasseltine and Eli Weisbord and we are two RI high school students who recently created Rhode Island Virtual Tutoring (RIVT.) Our vision for RIVT is to organize and provide free one on one weekly tutoring sessions between high school tutors and younger students, giving older RI students an opportunity to share their knowledge. We hope to create a network of students of all ages around the state of Rhode Island. Tutoring in all of the general elementary level courses and many middle school classes will be offered at the program’s launch.
The two of us are extremely excited to share this project and we hope that the program continues to grow until we can ensure that no motivated student is left without the resources they need to thrive intellectually. Please pass this on to anyone whom you feel could benefit from this opportunity!
Free Tutoring Opportunity Launching with Schoolhouse.world
Schoolhouse.world is a new online platform from Sal Khan, the founder of Khan Academy, that matches students around the world with free tutors. The tutors provide small-group math and SAT prep tutoring for students in grades 6-12, building on the Khan Academy curriculum. Rhode Island is one of two state-level partnerships offering this opportunity to students across the state. Registration is now live on the All Course Network (ACN) and students can sign up here on EnrollRI. There is no deadline for students to sign up (though schools will still need to approve their enrollment via the ACN), no cost to LEAs or students, and no requirement to participate. Please help us spread the word to your students, teachers, parents, and communities! More information on the partnership can be found here.
