The Importance of Boredom
by Carter Smith

“I am bored!”

Did you hear this during the downtime over school vacation from one of your children?

The state of boredom might not be so bad. In fact, studies have shown and many experts claim that boredom makes people more creative. In a March 2015 article in the London Telegraph, Sarah Knapton interviews successful adults and reviews research from psychologists that assert that boredom, “though by its very nature tedious and unpleasant ...might actually stimulate creativity.”

Dr. Sandi Mann, the principal author of a study published in the Psychologist, the professional journal of the British Psychological Society, feels that parents should allow their children to experience boredom so they can use their imagination to create their own entertainment. Albert Einstein, who used to spend time watching insects crawl on the sidewalk, once said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge.”

ABS Art News

In art the children are awaiting the completion of the clay bisque firing process so that they can begin to glaze their pieces before they are fired a second time. Meanwhile, in Kindergarten, we are creating drawings inspired by Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak. First and second graders are making charcoal drawings of animals while observing their basic shapes and forms and then practicing visual texture and shading techniques.

For our upcoming lantern making workshops with Artist-in-Residence Gowri Savoor, http://www.gowrisavoor.com/, we are still in need of clean 32 ounce yogurt containers. Thank you to all who have dropped them in the box in our front lobby! Forthcoming will be information on the details of this exciting residency which will take place during the first two weeks of February.

Skiing and Snowboarding Freestyle Club for WCS

Hello my name is Beckett Pintair. For my eighth grade challenge project I am offering a Skiing and Snowboarding Freestyle Club for WCS. We will meet Friday afternoons at Cochran’s Ski Area following ski/ride lessons during the free ski session. The Freestyle Club is open to kids who are signed up for Cochran's lessons, are at level seven or eight, and want to learn basic freestyle. In addition, this group will brainstorm ways to raise money through community service in the hopes of providing Cochran’s with a new rail. We will also have some area ski/ride professionals come in and teach us freestyle basics, from shaping jumps to grinding rails. This will be a great team building experience and a lot of fun! This club will be supervised by Mr. Alex Pintair. He can be reached at: pintairfamily@gmail.com. If you are interested in joining, please email me at: Beckettpintair@cssu.org.
