Helping Your Middle School Child Succeed
Parents play a critical role during the middle school years, especially when it comes to academic success. This article from KidsHealth is full of wisdom as well as practical advice on helping students gain the skills they will need throughout their educational careers. It also outlines specific steps parents can take to foster a collaborative approach between child and parent.
Let's Get Moving!
Physical activity is important for everyone, middle school students included. Regular physical activity in childhood and adolescence is important for promoting lifelong health and well-being and preventing various health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity.
The US Department of Health and Human Services recommends that children and adolescents aged 6 to 17 years have at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day. Students who are physically active tend to have better grades, school attendance, cognitive performance, and classroom behaviors.
Who Can You Turn to For Assistance?
If you have concerns about your child and want to reach out to someone at his/her school, consider making an appointment with the school counselor. Your child's counselor is knowledgable about resources within the school and in the community as well. A counselor will consult with the school social worker, school nurse, and/or school psychologist as needed. All of these professionals collaborate for the best interest of your child and you. Don't hesitate to reach out with questions or to schedule a meeting.
Middle School Program Requirements
Crosby Scholars in the middle school program must complete two hours of community service annually and attend one academy each year. Sixth-grade academies are held in the fall, and seventh- and eighth-grade academies are held during the spring semester. Dates and locations are posted in the Crosby Scholars Student Portal, and students must register through the portal in order to attend an academy.
Crosby Scholars--Your Portal to the Future
It is vital that all Crosby Scholars activate and login to their student portal regularly. The portal is where students register for academies and where important program information is posted. If you need assistance, please call the Crosby office at 336.725.5371 or email Tara Stokes, Middle School Program Coordinator, at tstokes@crosbyscholars.org, or her assistant, Alex Lawrence, at alawrence@crosbyscholars.org.
