This Month's Supportive Suggestion: Be Mindful of Holiday Worries
With the holidays upon us, we know students can get a bit wound up. The routine tends to be off, both at home and in the classroom. Some students have big feelings about the holidays and extra time spent at home. Here are some ideas of what you can do to keep things on track and support students as we move into this season:
- Avoid overstimulating decorations
- Use inclusive language (for example, use "family" or "adults at home" instead of "mom and dad")
- Avoid gifts for specific family members and/or family projects
- Be the safe place...because sometimes home is not
- Recognize and validate emotions (Try "I understand you feel ____." instead of "It's just a stressful time of year.")
- Prepare for some challenging behaviors
- Keep routines going, as best you can
