The Tiger Times
The Monthly Franklin Family Newsletter - January 2021
Happy New Year!
Welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful two weeks with your children and beautiful holidays, despite all of the challenges of this time.
We're optimistic that better things are coming in the new year. The Franklin teachers and staff have returned with renewed hope and commitment to make distanced learning as successful as possible in the coming months. We will all continue to partner and get through this together in 2021!
Due to the heightened Covid concerns right now, we are postponing the January Materials Distribution originally scheduled for this week. We sincerely hope to be able to distribute materials for students later in the month!
On a more positive note, we are excited to share that we will have a virtual Franklin Spirit Week from 1/25-1/29! Just as during in-person school, there will be themes for each day of the week, and students will get to be silly and have fun dressing up. On the final day of Spirit Week (1/29) we will come together for our January Friday Assemblies. Lots more details coming soon!
And, for those of you who signed your children up for Afternoon Enrichment Clubs (hooray!) - you will be notified by club leaders with links and information you need by the end of this week.
If you have any questions or concerns, as always, please reach out to us!
Happy New Year to everyone, and please stay safe.
In partnership,
Ms. Lai & Ms. Sufrin

Spotlight on Franklin Teachers!
Ms. Willis
Hello! I am Ms. Willis and I am so proud to be a 1st grade teacher at Franklin! I previously served at Franklin as an AmeriCorps member with Reading Partners and I am thrilled to be back. We do so much in 1st grade, both academically and in building our classroom community! We work hard every day to be our best readers, scientists, mathematicians, writers, and so much more! When I’m not teaching, I love walking around Lake Merritt, reading, and spending time with family and friends.
Ms. Luu
Hi! I am Ms. Luu, one of four first grade teachers at Franklin school. I began teaching in 1997 and continue to teach at this same school for the past 24 years. I taught Kindergarten for eight years and first grade for almost 16 years. I chose to teach at Franklin school because I love the diversity of our
student population, children from diverse ethnic backgrounds. I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of children, especially immigrant children like myself. My parents are Chinese, but I was born and raised in Vietnam. In Vietnam, I had to learn two languages Vietnamese and Chinese. When I came to the United States, I had to learn English, my third language. Learning English was a challenge for me, but the ESL
teacher I had in my first year in the United States made a tremendous impact on me. I learned to speak English in less than one year. Not only that, I was able to skip one grade when our family moved to San Francisco, and I had to take the placement test to enter elementary school in San Francisco. As a teacher, I use my experience as a newcomer and my language skills (Chinese and Vietnamese) to help non-English speaking students learn English and the academic subject areas of reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. In my free time, I enjoy cooking Chinese and Vietnamese dishes for my family. I also listen to songs
by the Beatles and the Bee Gees, and Chinese songs from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. I am looking forward to traveling to Asia in the near future. I would like to visit my birthplace, Vietnam.
Mr. Hill
Hello there. This is my Twenty-third year teaching, and my twentieth here at Franklin. WOW! And I’ve enjoyed every second of it. Enchanting the young learners with a desire to learn thrills me. Collaborating with parents to optimize their child's development calls me. There is nothing like listening to the kids. I adore my family. I enjoy thinking, sports, the outdoors, puzzles, trivia, gardening, visiting family and friends in Mexico, writing poetry, relaxing, praying.
Ms. Chang
I want to teach my students how~
to live this life on earth,
to face its struggles and strife
and to know and share their worth,
not just the lesson in a book,
or how the rivers flow,
but to choose the proper path
wherever they may go,
to understand eternal truth
and know right from wrong,
and gather all the beauty of
a flower and a song.
I hope to do my part
in building character and confidence
and happiness of heart.
(adapted from poem by J. Metcalf)
