Roosevelt Record

September 2022

Big picture

Dear Families,

On behalf of the staff of Roosevelt School, I would like to welcome you to the 2022-2023 school year! Whether you are new to Roosevelt School or you are a returning family, I hope you are as excited as I am for the year ahead.

As always, we look forward to partnering with you to provide your child with the best possible education. There are several easy ways to keep electronically informed and in touch with the school. School notices are emailed home to parents, and each month a newsletter will be posted on the school's website. In addition to correspondence with your child's classroom teacher, we encourage you to be on the lookout for frequent emails from the North Arlington School District detailing upcoming events and important updates. Please ensure that your most up-to-date contact information, including your current email, is on file. Furthermore, important questions requiring a response can be found on the parent portal. In particular, media consent must be given in order for children to be included in pictures that we frequently post on our school website. Lastly, our updated Elementary Handbook, which contains important information, may be accessed via the school website.

As always, please do not hesitate to contact me at any point regarding your child's education. I look forward to working together to ensure another enjoyable year at Roosevelt!

Sincerely,

Alicia Giammanco

Principal

Arrival and Dismissal

School begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. At 8:25 a.m., school personnel will be outside to supervise students as they begin lining up on the blacktop. For your child's safety, please remember to bring identification with you when picking up your child, as you may be asked to provide it to staff members or office personnel. Please note that only those designated individuals that have been listed as emergency contacts will be permitted to pick up your child, and they must have identification. In order to ensure safety and accuracy, please notify your child’s teacher or our secretary, Mrs. Sheedy (asheedy@navikings.org), in writing, about changes to your child’s dismissal plan. Students will be dismissed at 3:00 p.m. as follows:

  • Grades PK & K: Kindergarten Wing (located by basketball courts)
  • Grades 1-5: Main Entrance

Attendance

Consistent attendance at school, both in terms of arriving on time and being present throughout the school year, is an essential component of a high quality education. Repeated absences, whether excused or unexcused, deprive students from essential learning opportunities and may result in corrective actions, including retention. Please see BOE policy # 5200 for complete details. As a reminder, instruction begins promptly at 8:30 a.m. Thank you for your anticipated cooperation in this very important matter.

If your child is absent, please be sure to notify the main office before 8:00 a.m. If your child was seen by a medical professional, please provide a doctor's note to our nurse, Mrs. Fernandez (mafernandez@navikings.org).

Uniform Information

All students in the North Arlington School District are required to wear uniforms every day. On physical education days, students are reminded to wear sneakers. It is important to ensure that students are dressed appropriately for the weather, as they may go outside. On warmer days, please note that open toe shoes are not permitted.

Additional information regarding our uniform policy may be found here: https://www.navikings.org/domain/1163.

Be sure to write your child's name on the label of sweaters, jackets, etc.

Departmentalizing

We are excited to be following a new instructional model, departmentalization, in which teachers specialize in specific subjects. Students in grades 4 and 5 will receive language arts and social studies instruction from Mrs. Wei and math and science instruction from Ms. Pigott.

Over the past few years, a lot of research and planning has gone into this new schedule, and we are excited to begin implementing it in the North Arlington elementary schools. Throughout the first week of school, we will be discussing expectations as they relate to preparing for different classes, transitioning, and sharing educational spaces with our peers.

Start Strong (Grades 4 & 5)

Once again, New Jersey students in Grades 4 and 5 will participate in the Start Strong assessment, which assists in the identification of the most appropriate level of supports students need in English language arts and mathematics based on priority New Jersey Student Learning Standards from the prior academic year. The Start Strong assessments are intentionally brief and quickly provide critical data to schools and families, as we work together to address students’ unique needs at the beginning of the school year. This assessment will complement our LinkIt Form A assessment, which will also take place during the fall for grades 1-5.

Class Parties

Throughout the school year, there will be various celebrations in which food items will be brought in (e.g. pizza, ice pops, etc.). If you do not wish for your child to have a snack that will be distributed during these occasions, kindly reply to me directly.
