Meet Our STEM Coach
Greetings! My name is Christina Davis and I am the STEM Coach at Wallace Gregg Elementary. Prior to being a STEM Coach, I served as a classroom teacher, afterschool tutor, and after school program director.
This year we will be engage our students in Project Lead The Way (PLTW). Project Lead The Way is an innovative project-based learning program that incorporates science, technology, engineering, and math and helps students develop skill sets and understandings that align with the profile of the South Carolina graduate. Students will collaboratively explore and solve real-world challenges in exciting and engaging ways utilizing pathways in computer science, engineering, and biomedical science. Students will work through three main activities where they gain knowledge and skills. After students have completed the main activities, students will then investigate a community-based problem and apply the knowledge and skills gained from activities to solve the real-world problem effectively and efficiently.
As your STEM coach, I will work closely and collaboratively with teachers to ensure students experience success in the STEM curriculum. Please review my STEM Google Site for additional information and resources. If you have any questions about STEM, please feel free to contact me at cdavis@fsd1.org or 843-664-8481. I look forward to a productive year for our students and teachers.
--Ms. C. Davis
STAR 360
This week, all students at Wallace Gregg Elementary will participate in the STAR 360 assessment. The assessment is designed to gauge the students independent reading and math level.
ABOUT STAR360
STAR360 consists of two customized reading and one Math tests for students to take on a computer. As a student takes the assessment, the software selects items based on the student’s responses. If the student answers the item correctly, the software increases the difficulty level of the next item. If the student answers incorrectly, the software lowers the difficulty level of the next item. By continually adjusting the difficulty of an item to what the student has shown s/he can or cannot do, the assessment is tailored to accurately measure each student’s level of achievement.
WHICH TESTS SHOULD MY STUDENT TAKE?
Star Early Literacy should be completed by all students in grades K-1 and, non-readers of any grade. It consists of 27 items and generally takes fewer than 15 minutes for the student to complete the assessment.
STAR Reading should be taken by all students in grades 2-8 unless STAR Early Literacy is warranted instead. It consists of 34 items and generally takes fewer than 30 minutes for the student to complete the assessment.
STAR Math should be taken by all students in grades K-8. It consists of 34 items and takes approximately 20 minutes for the student to complete the assessment.
