HPES Weekly Newsletter
09/09/2019
Welcome back...
Wow! Last week was a whirlwind! I hope you were able to get some rest this weekend. Thank-you for hanging in there and going above and beyond every day. Friday’s dance was so much fun; we had a great turn out of students! It is exciting to see the community involvement at HPES. Thank-you staff and PTO for making this happen!
Staffing
Please welcome Ms. Marilyn Alvarez-Bryant to our SpEd. team. Ms. Alvarez will be serving as one of our Resource/Inclusion teachers. She is coming to us from Weiss High School with experience in counseling, special education resource/inclusion teacher and essential academics experience. We are very excited to have her join our HPES Bulldog family. She will be transitioning to our campus very soon.
We would also love to welcome Ms. Leslie Bates as one of our SpEd. IBC unit Educational Assistants. Ms. Bates comes to us with experience as a substitute, special education assistant, and has already been helping out and building relationships with our students in our IBC unit. Thank-you Ms. Bates, and Welcome to HPES!
We are still actively looking for a Bilingual SpEd. teacher to serve as a Resource/Inclusion teacher. We will continue to search for candidates this week. If you know of anyone, send them our way.
Grandparents Luncheon
SWAT
Monday: KG & 4th
Thursday: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & 5th
This week we will focus on: Impact Cycle Reflection
- Reflect on the video you recorded last week
- Identify a goal for self-growth
- Set a time-frame to implement practice
Next week during SWAT we will work on creating TTESS SLO goals.
BackPack Pfriends
BackPack Pfriends is a partnership between several churches, volunteer groups, and civic organizations to help meet the needs of students in Highland Park Elementary. DELL currently sponsors HPES and delivers food on Friday for students to take home.
Teachers can nominate students that could benefit from having additional food sent home on Friday's. Mrs. Vazquez will contact families and organize distributions. Students who participated last year will automatically receive a parent permission letter this school year.
Nominate by clicking the link below.

Principal Read-Aloud
HPES Recognized as Healthiest School!
Remember...
- Check your boxes for Sunshine Committee Dues and Information. Don’t forget to pay those dues!
- You may wear a college shirt on Wednesdays and a school shirt on Fridays with jeans
- Take attendance at 9:30 promptly.
- Be on time when dropping off and picking up students at specials and lunch.
Teaching Tip
Break student tasks into manageable 'chunks'. Students may show unexpected behavior to escape activities that they find too hard or tedious. Consider breaking a larger task into smaller or easier 'chunks' that the student will more willingly undertake.
Behavior Tip
Preview rules/behavioral expectations: Some students show unexpected behavior because they are impulsive and do not always think through the consequences of their actions. These students can benefit from having the teacher briefly review rules and/or behavioral expectations just before the students go into a potentially challenging situation or setting (walking down the hall, going to lunch, going to recess).
Kudos
- Shout out to Ms. Ceballos for going above and beyond in ensuring our bilingual students who receive special education services needs are being met and taken care of. We appreciate your hard work and dedication Lucy!
- Shout out to Ms. Clark for organizing HPES's Cheerleading team! I can't wait to see what you can do with this team!
- Shout out to Ms.Reyes for hosting an amazing Book Fair Preview- so exciting to see how many new books we can get our hands on- and the treats were delightful!
- Shout out to Nurse Christina for her help with the vision and hearing screenings while still supporting the health needs of all our students. You rock!
